Notes for George BERRY

It seems there is a conflict in this man's life. Some researchershave p laced him as the son of Enoch and Dulcebella but his datesdon't match t hat family. Others say that no wife or children havebeen found for hi m and since his will mentioned only other relatives,it is assumed he n ever married. And yet he has 2 wives listed hereas placed by others. R elatives listed in the will are consistentwith him belonging to this f amily.

Residences & events:

1793 Nelson Co, KY. At tax time he had 105 acres, 2 horses, 6cattle, a nd was the only male in the house over age 21.

1794 Nelson Co, KY tax records recorded his large Revolutionary Warla nd grand of some 4000 acres but it was supposedly in Logan Co.Along wi th the huge estate he was also taxed for 2 horses and 9cattle. William w as still in the same old neighborhood.

Logan Co, KY

1810 Butler Co, KY. A new county was carved from the old and soGeorge 's property may have ended up in the new one as the followingwas recor ded by relatives: "During my time in the office of theClerk of the Bu tler County Court, in Butler County, Kentucky, I foundthat one George B erry was given an Land Grant for 5,000 acres of landlying on the Dalla ms Creek in Butler County, Kentucky, for hisservices in the Revolution ary War. I did extensive searching in bothButler County and Logan Cou nty and could never find a conveyance fromGeorge Berry or his heirs fo r any of the 5,000 acre tract."

And later: "This 5,000 acres lying on Dallams Creek is near Berry'sLi ck where the Berrys settled first in Butler County. The communityis c alled Berry's Lick for this reason: 'The Berry's settled thereand owne d land, and there was a well that produced salt water. Inthe early da ys salt produced at that location was sold to merchantsfrom as far awa y as Nashville, Tennessee. The deer would come thereto lick the salt, h ence the name.' "

Henderson Co, KY
LDS records have his birth place as Spencer, IN but his family livedin V A before and after his birth so it was probably there.
His will named only his brother, John, two nieces, one of whom wasEnoc h's daughter and nephew, James M Berry, son of Enoch, asexecutor.
