Notes for James Baird PALMER


James was said to be Hannah's 9th child.

Residences & events:

1800 Salisbury Twp, Rowan Co, NC. At census time James Palmer'sfamily i ncluded: 1 male under the age of 10, James was age 26-44, 2females und er 10, and 1 age 16-25. Three doors down was brotherPhilip. Their pa rents and sister Ruhanna and Abraham Pippinger werein the same townshi p.

1810 Where was James at census time?

1820 There were 3 James Palmers in the NC census, in Bertie,Pasquotan k, and Chatham Counties. Was one of them this man?

1830 Davidson Co, NC. Recorded in that census in James Palmer'shouse w ere 1 male, age 15-20, James at 50-60, 1 female under 5 , and1 age 20- 30. Where was his wife? No slaves were listed. James wasthe only Pa lmer in the county.

1840 Same place. James Palmer, Sr, was 60-70 years old when thecensu s taker came around that year. In his household were: 1 male,age 5-1 0, 1 at 20-30, 1 female was 10-15, 1 at 30-40, and 1 was also60-70. H e also had 3 slaves. Son John, 30-40, lived next door, sonJames Jr li ved in the same county.
His will, signed 5/2/1845 says:

I, James Palmer of the county of Davidson and state of North Carolinab eing in sound mind and memory do this 2nd day of May 1845 make andorda in this to be my last will and testament.

1st I give and devise unto my son Abram Palmer the plantation whereonh e now lives.

2nd I give and bequeath unto my daughter in law Polly Palmer the useof t he plantation on which she now lives until her youngest child nowlivin g come to the age ten years or no longer than she remains singleprovid ed she should marry before the said time then it is my will andpleasur e that the said plantation be equally divided among the livingchildren o f my son John Palmer (dec).

3rd I give and bequeath unto my children Hannah Swing, Edmund, andJame s Palmer and Mary Miller five hundred dollars each and also forehundre d dollars to Roanna Hodges and children and five hundreddollars to the c hildren of Katharine Parks dec.

5th I give and bequeath unto Joseph Sothern (Nothern?) son of BarbaraN orhern four hundred dollars and one horse worth fifty dollars thoughsh ould he die before he (arrives?) at the age of twenty this gift andbeq ueath is to be null and void as to him and his heirs except onehundred d ollars which I hereby give to his mother Barbara Nothern.

6th All my personal and Real Estate except such as is mentioned aboveI w ill to be sold and after the payment of all just claims to beequally d ivided among my children Edmond, James and Abram Palmer,Hannah Irving ( Swing?), and Mary Miller and the children of RhoannaHodge (dec) and Ka tharine Parks (dec) that is the children of eachdeceased daughter to r eceive what their mother would be entitled toin an equal division of t he Residue, and I also will and wish thechildren of my son John Palmer ( dec) to receive one share as abovestated ???? they will pay a note or b ond for about eighty dollars ofinterest that I hold against the said J ohn Palmer (dec) nototherwise.

7th I hereby appoint my son Abram Palmer to be my executor. Inwitness w hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and yearabove writ ten.

According to his baptism record he was the 9th child of ElizabethBowlb y. Another note says "James' great-aunt, came from England,married J ames Baird, and died testate in Hunterdon County, NJ in1782."
