Notes for Edmond PALMER


Edmond probably is not the son of Edmund, unless Edmund's birth datewa s earlier than posted as currently there are only 12 years betweenthem . He may be a cousin or nephew. Until his lineage has beendetermined h e will remain here for safekeeping.

Descendants said Edmond was an ordained Baptist minister who fought int he Rev War in the VA Continental line. The following was found inVA a nd WV Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pensions:

"Palmer, Edmond, b 6/1747 Bethlehem Co, West Jersey (sic); efFrederick C o, VA, where res, in VA regiment; PN 1832 Buncombe Co, NCwhere moved t o right after RW; QLF states an Edmond Palmer dd 1836Mason Co, KY. F- S7295 R1863"

Edmond's pension started on 9/23/1833 at the age of 86.

The Sprinkle Families of Western NC says:

"Edmond Palmer, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, was asurv eyor and pioneer settler on the Big Ivy River about 1790. Hebrought m any families from Rowan County, NC to settle in thebeautiful mountains o f 'Old Buncombe County' now known as MadisonCounty. Edmond was one of t he largest landowners in the area. DevoutChristians....Palmer Ford se ttlement on the Ivy River was named inhis honor."

Rowan Co split to Burke where we find Edmond in the 1790 census, thenB urke split to Buncombe in 1791 where he is found in 1792 courtrecords . S ince he is mentioned in early history of both Burke Co &Buncombe, he p robably never moved but rather lines shifted aroundhim.



1790 12th Comp, Burke Co, NC. Listed in that census as EdmundParmer, h is family included 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 4females. In t he 11th Comp was William Brittain. Also in Burke Cowere two John Parm ers as well as Aron, Phillip, and Jemima Brittain.

From First Session of Buncombe County Court Minutes:

4/1792 "Ordered that Philip Hodenpile Esqr. bring to July term threeo rphan children which are in his possession and care, and thatWilliam H inton, Richd Pruitt, Wm Edwards, Jno Edwards and EdmundPalmer be summo ned to attend said court to give evidence in behalfsaid orphans - and f or defendant summons Thomas Hopper."

10/1792 "Ordered by court that the following persons serve as jurorsa t october Sessions 1792 viz: Joseph Gash; Jas. chambers; Jos.Smith; W m. Metlock; Jno Patton; Jno. Gash; Danl. "Ordered by court that Austin Choate, Wm. Brittain, John Dillard,Charl esGwin, James Standfield, Henry Adkins, John Weaver, JohnChambers, Jam es Boys, Henry Roberts, John Bounds, Nathan Dever,Edmund Palmer, Gabri el Keith, Jacob Biffles, & James Love be a juryto view mark and lay ou t a road from the waggon ford on Rims Creekthe nearest and best way ac cording to law to Austin Choates on IvyRiver who are to meet the third m onday in august at John Dillards, WmBrittain to attend and qualify sai d Jury to are to report to Octor.term 1792."

From Minutes of October Court - 1792

"At a court of common pleas and quarter sessions began opened and heldf or the county of Buncombe at the dwelling house of Colo. WilliamDaviso n on the third monday of October A.D. 1792. Present: WilliamDavidson, L ambert Clayton, William Fletcher.
GrandJury: Moses Ashbrook; James Chambers; Joseph Smith; Baxter Davis;J ames Dever; Andr. Miller, John Bounds; Wm. Devor Senr.; Chas. Gwin;Jos eph Bounds; Hickman Hensely; Edwd. Williams; Edmund Palmer."

From Buncombe Co, Deeds, 1783-1850:

10-174: 25 Nov. 1799, John Strother to Pierce Cody, $21-1/2, 2 parcelso n Joy? (Ivy?) River joining said Cody's land, 100 acres, and 100acres p art of large tract granted to John Brey Bount of 320 acres,640 acres, s heriff's deed to said Strother 29 Sept. 1798. Wit. EdmondPalmer. (FHL f ilm 410,552)

1800 Morgan Twp, Buncombe Co, NC. That census taker recorded him asE dmund Palmer, over 45 years of age with a household consisting of 1mal e under 10, 1 age 16-25, 1 female under 10, 1 female at 10-15, andhis w ife, also over 45. On the previous page was Isiah Palmer,26-44. (Who w as he?). They were the only Palmers in the county,William and James B rittain were also there.

In the Dillard family web site is:

"Iziah Palmer on August 27, 1802 conveyed to Thomas Dillard a 100 acret ract on the waters of Pilborns Branch and Ivy River adjoining EdmondPa lmer, Savage Littleton and the Ivy River with an adjoining tract ofthi rty acres. 125 Witnesses to this deed were John Dillard andWilliam Gre gory. This deed was proved in open court on the oath ofJohn Dillard."

April Session 1810:
"The within deed was proved in open Court by Edward Palmer one of theS ubscribing Witnesses thereto recorded & ordered to be Registered May11 , 1810. Certified D Vance Clk" (The deed was between Levi Crowderand J amestown Hatcher for 129 acres on Reems Creek.)

1810 Buncombe Co, NC Listed in the census there was Edward Palmerwith a f amily consisting of 1 male age 16-25, Edward was over 45, 1female at 1 6-25. and one also over 45. In the same county wereJessee and John Pa lmer families.

January Sessions 1811
The within Deed was proved in Open Court By Edmund Palmer one of thesu bscribing Witnesses thereto Accorded & Ordered to be Registered

Registered the 28th Day of February 1811
(This plat between John Dillard and Jamestown Hatcher for 100 acres onI vy Bull Creek used Palmer's property in the description: "on IvyRiver B eginning on a Dogwood at Palmers North East Corner near thepath that l edds to the mouth of Bull Creek then West with Palmersline.")

8/7/1820 Same place. That year Edmond Palmer's family included onlyh imself and his wife, both over 45 years of age. He was engaged inagri culture. In the same county were Jesse and John Palmer Jr.

1830 Edmund and Mary were probably the old couple living withdaughter I sabella and William Sprinkle, Edmund at 80-90, Mary at70-80.











The inscription on his gravestone says:

Rev. War Soldier, Surveyor and Farmer
Pioneer settlers of Ivy River about 1790. They lived near Palmers Fordw hich takes its name from Edmond Palmer. Following Edmond's servicein C ol. Edmund's VA Reg't American Rev. Army, these early settlershelped b ring many settlers to this area. Devout Christians, theyexemplified th e hardy people who loved God, loved freedom and workedthat their desce ndents might enjoy liberty.
