Notes for John Stephen Sr COONROD


Stephen's age conflicts with the marriage and other children of Ulricha nd Margaret but if he were younger, he would conflict with his ownchil dren. He's more like the brother of Ullrich.

He was a blacksmith.

1737 Philadelphia, PA Stephen arrived aboard the Charming Nancy fromt he Netherlands with the last stop in England, according to Ancestry.

1758 Augusta Co, VA was when he settled there. Cemetery records sayh e settled that year in Rockingham Co but that county wasn't carvedour o f Augusta Co until 1778.

6/28/1758 Augusta Co, VA. The estate of Peter Moser paid him forserv ices rendered.

2/8/1759 He was among the purchasers of John Vinegard's estate.

He was mentioned several times in the Augusta Co, VA, court records:

8/13/1762 "Jacob Coger, of Hallifax County, to Michael Coger, £100,45 5 acres on Shanando, part of 930 acres patented to Jacob, 24thApril, 1 753. Cor. Thomas McCready (conveyed from Jacob), the patentlines. Test e: Felta Kop (Valentine Cope), Stephen Conrad. Delivered:M. Coger, 26t h April, 1763."

8/22/1764 He and 2 others were bondsmen for the estate of WilliamFraz ier.

11/21/1764 "Stephen Conrad and Catherine ( ) to George Huffman, Jr.,£ 85, 220 acres; corner Wood's land on Boon's Run. Delivered: Geo.Huffma n, 21st May, 1771."

4/25/1765 " James and Moses Green to Steven Conrad, £60, 234 acres,pa rt of 2000 acres patented to James Wood and Robert Green, on Boon'sRun b etween Picked Mountain and Shanandore River, between JohnBurke's and R unkle's land. Teste: Henry Long, Jacob ( ) Parshinger,George Conrad. D elivered: George Conrad, August Court,1776.

5/21/1766 "Bamet Man and Margret ( ) to George Man, £20, 100 acres,pa rt of tract patented to Barnet, 12th May, 1759, on Stoney Run,corner J acob Man's land. Teste: Jacob Parsinger, Steven Conrod, JohnMan."

Apparently Stephen was in the middle of a court suit when he died. Thef ollowing appears in the Augusta Co, VA, court records: "StephenConrad v s. George Hoffmans.--Abates by plaintiff's death."

(This entry occurred after his death so must belong to another unknownS tephen but is placed here for safe keeping until that person can beide ntified.

He died intestate.

11/17/1767 "George Conrad qualifies administrator of Stephen Conrad."

11/26/1767 "Stephen Conrad's estate sold to, viz: John Coutch, LewisF isher, Stephen Hensbengar, Zachariah Rexrode, Henry Tamewood,Peachey G ilmore."

8/17/1769. "Settlement recorded of estate of Stephen Conrad (Geo.Conro d, executor)--Paid, viz: Jacob Bear, John Fudge, Jno. Michl.Stophelmir e, Mathias Kersh, Michl. Summy, Jno. Seller, ValentineMitcher, Paul Li ngal, Mauks Swadley, Jacob Archinbright, Peter Smith,Saml. Maggot, Mic hl. Shirley, Jacob Shell, Christian Pikle, JacobPeters,
Conrad Peterfish, George Fullingar, Geo. Mallo."

7/16/1770 "George Conrad (and Catherine ( ), eldest son and heir ofSt ephen Conrad to Stephen Conrad, brother of said George £__,natural lov e and affection. Two tracts 125 acres, 106 acres of whichis part of 10 8 acres conveyed to said George by John Burk and 19acres, part of trac t whereon George now lives, on Boon's Run, abranch of Shanandore; also 2 4 acres patented to Stephen Conrad,father to Stephen, 30th August, 176 3, and descended to George aseldest son and heir, lying between Lusk a nd Boon's Runs; corner JohnSellers; corner Nutt's land; corner Wood's l and; Kipling's(Kisling's, Rifling's) corner."

8/19/1776 "Stephen Conrad's further settlement-- To paid JohnSworback , the minister, part of the testator's subscription; by atract of land s old my brother. George Conrad, executor."

In Section 1 there is a large monument dedicated to the Conrad family;" John Stephen Conrad, Sr. - his wife Anna Catarina Stahlschmidt andmore t han 50 desce ndants are buried in this lot outlined by 4granite posts. C oming from Germany they settled here about 1758. JohnStephen, Sr., die d in 1767 and his wife in 1768. Their roughunlettered grave stone s no w support this tablet. East Point Cemeterythus began." Robert Crawford f urnished the following information:"The cemetery of Mary Stover where m y great-great-grandfather,Sinclair Shiflet, asked to be buried in his w ill - the property whereEast Point Cemetery is located, belonged to th e Conrad Family whosettled here around 1750. Mary Anne Conrd, daughter o f John and AnnMaria Nicholas Conrad, eventually became the owner of th is property.Mary A. Conrad and David Stover were married on Feb 1, 185 5 and Davidwas killed in the Civil War on July 1, 1861. Mary A. Stover s old aparcel of land to the trustees (Rev. Henry Jones, Robert Harnsber ger,Thomas Miller, Edward E. Coffman and Samuel Shifflett) of East Poi ntCemetery on February 16, 1888, deed book 32, page 503 of Rockingham Co unty records. There was a cemetery already on the land when plot wasso ld to the trustees of East Point Cemetery. The deed has a notationindi cating the sale included 'a certain lot or parcel of landincluding the o ld burial ground now enclosed and used for burialpurposes.'
