Notes for Abraham CARTLICH

From the History of Perry Co, OH, 1883:

"CARTLICH, REV. ABRAHAM, was born 1807, in Fauquier county, Virginia,a nd when yet an infant his parents arrived in Clayton township,Perry c ounty, Ohio. Alter a brief residence here, they lived inKentucky nine y ears, and returned to Perry county, Ohio. Abraham
engaged in business as a saddler and harness maker, which he pursuedve ry successfully for ten years, at Adelphia, Ross county, Ohio. Fromthi s forth for thirty-seven years he preached as an intinerant in theMeth odist Episcopal connection. His ministry was attended with greatsucces s, and at least three thousand members were added to the churchunder h is pastorship. During three years of his pastorate, one ofwhich was 18 50, he added at the rate of three hundred members peryear. Sincerity a nd earnestness, combined with a purity of characterwhich was maintaine d through life without a stain, added to hisperseverance and fortitude , were the elements of his ministeralsuccess. At the age of twenty-fou r, he was united in marriage to MissLucinda Will. This estimable lady d eparted this life in 1852. Thechildren by this marriage are George W. o f Creston Iowa, a merchantwho landed there
with $40, in 1855, and is now estimated at $40,000; Jesse, now ofHarla n, Iowa, a physician, who went from Ohio in 1865. Both thesesons wer e in service of the war department during the late Rebellion. The only d aughter living is Clara Tway, now of London, Ohio. Mr.Cartlich was al ways a small eater, and the proverbial "yellow-leggedchicken,"
set apart for the preacher, could not tempt him from his code ofpruden ce. As for tobacco and spirits, he never used either, and hasmanaged t o arrive now to a ripe old age of seventy-five years, ingood health, w ithout them. His father, Jesse Cartlich, thoughchronically feeble, by o bservance of the same temperate habits, livedto the age of eighty-thre e years, and died in Minnesota, about theyear 1860.

The second and present wife of Rev. Abraham Cartlich, was Miss JaneVan G undy, of Ross county, whom he married in 1854. Her father wasRev. John V an Gundy, who labored as a minister in the MethodistEpiscopal Church f or thirty years, and after removal from Rosscounty, Ohio, where he pos sessed large landed estates, died inAtchison county, Missouri. He sett led in Ohio in 1806, and served inthe War of 1812. Her grand-father wa s also named John Van Gundy. Hermother's name was Margaret Search, who se father was Thomas Search.Margaret died on one of her husband's farm s near Chillicothe, in1833, when Jane was in her seventh year. Her bro thers, all of whomare prosperous, are Jonas, St. Joseph's, Missouri; a nd James, John,William and Samuel, near Milton, Atchison county, Miss ouri.Tradition, which seems well founded, ascribed to the ancestry of t hisVan Gundy family close official relations to the Crown of Prussia, and a rupture of these relations which sent it to Pennsylvania, andthen ce to Ohio. The sisters of Mrs. Cartlich are Sarah Scarlet, who, when o nly seventeen, was successfully courted by a widower with threechildre n, and she has never regretted her youthful resolution. Theother siste r is Rachel Williams, and both have the same postofficeaddress, as the b rothers already named. Jane Cartlich is remarkablefor her business li ke methods, economy, hospitality and kindness tothe poor. Though the d aughter of a Methodist minister, and fortwenty-six years the wife of a M ethodist minister, she preserves acommendable liberality and charity f or others. She refers to thepreservation of an aunt given up to die an d yet living to rear auseful family, while her mother was taken from l ife in sound health,by cholera, in the same house and at the same time o f her aunt'sillness, as a remarkable dispensation of Providence. The s ame factapplies to her step-daughter, Mrs. Tway, who, when yet a child ,seemed affected beyond possibility of recovery, and yet she grew to womanhood, and is now the mother of five children. Mrs. Cartlich, though i n easy circumstances, labors as if she derived comfort, health and plea sure from exercise. Her husband, too, has a fineincome, which secures e ase and comfort, and they live alone, with nohousehold dependents."
