From the History of Crawford Co:

When it first received its name is indeterminate, but it is quitecerta in that in 1827, it was known as Cranberry, and, at that time, included t he present Chatfield Township, and perhaps others. This istrue. becaus e, when Andrew Jackson was elected President of theUnited States for h is first term, the few settlers in Chatfield cameto the cabin of Joshu a Chilcote, in Cranberry, to poll their votes, renderng it certain that t he latter township had been created a yearor two previously, and that i ts officers had been duly elected. Therewere some fifteen or sixteen v otes cast at the time, seven of themcoming from Cranberry; and the rem ainder from Chatfield or othertownships.....

About the time Aaron Cory located in the township, George Myers andJos hua Chilcote also came in and built their cabins. Myers purchasedthe l and where New Washington now stands. and afterward becameclosely ident ified with the early history of that village. Chilcotelocated about a m ile and a half southeast of New Washington. He hadcome from one of the E astern States a few years before, and hadsettled in Columbiana County, O hio ; but, when his land there aroseconsiderable in value, he sold out a nd came farther into theunsettled forest in order to purchase a larger t ract of land with themoney at his disposal. He had five sons-John, Nic odemus, James,.Joshua and Heathcote-and two or three daughters. These c hildrenmarried and settled in the neighborhood of their father's farm, a ndafterward became prominent citizens. The father was a man of Great energy and decision of character. He served at diflerent times innearly a ll the township offices, and was influential in opening upmany of the e arly roads. His descendants are yet living inneighboring counties. A y oung man named °Oak" Tyndal married one ofhis daughters in about 1827. T his was probably the first marriage inthe township.

1830 Cranberry Twp, Crawford Co, OH. Joshua still lived next door toJ ohn and 2 doors down the other direction was the family of James and2 d oors from him was Nichodemus.
