Notes for George HOUSER


LDS records say he was a plantation owner.

From Elmer A. Houser's Descendants of John Houser:

"George Houser, Sr., the youngest child of John Houser and Mary (E.Geo rge?) was a farmer and a Lutheran. He was born about 1760 in NorthCoro dus Twp. York Co. Pennsylvania, and was about three years oldwhen his f ather died in 1763. He was raised by his mother and hisolder brothers a nd sisters. He served in the Revolutionary War from1781 to 1783. He ma rried (1) Philipina Herleman, during that time.She was born about 1760 i n Pennsylvania, the daughter of SebastianHerleman and Mary Magdalena ? . Philipina was a sister of Anna MariaMagdalena Herleman, who married G eorge's older brother, John. Georgeand Philipina had six children, fou r of whom were born inPennsylvania. About 1790, George and Philipina m oved down the GreatValley of Virginia to Augusta Co. Philipina died of c hildbirthcomplications in 1791 in Augusta Co. after giving birth to tw indaughters. George married (2) Hannah Rhinehart on 13 August 1792 in Augusta Co. She was born about 1770 in Pennsylvania, the daughter ofOwe n Rhinehart. About 1801, George and Hannah moved to Washington Co.Virg inia, near the Tennessee line and, about 1808, they moved on toKnox Co . Tennessee. There they joined George's brother John and hisfamily. Th e families set about establishing a small German speakingcommunity aro ud St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the first meetings ofwhich were held ab out 1808 in the homes of John and George Houser onland then owned by t he Cherokee Indians, in what is the NeubertsCommunity of Knox Co. Tenn essee. George sold his land in Augusta Co.Virginia and obtained a deed t o his Knox Co. property in December1815. George and Hannah had seven c hildren, four in Augusta Co. andthree in Washington Co. George died in M arch 1843 and Hannah diedabout 1845, both in Knox Co. and both buried a t St. Paul's (laterZion) Lutheran Church in Knox Co."

Residences & events:

George has not been found in any census that agrees with migrations asp roposed by descendants.

Descendant Robert Evans said after George married Hannah, they movedto W ashington Co, VA and had a farm partly in Washington Co, VA andpartly i n Sullivan Co, TN. They moved to Knox Co, TN 1806-1815.

1812 Sullivan Co, TN. His name appeared on the tax list there thatye ar.

1840 Knox Co, TN. He was probably the 70-79 year old male livingwith s on Jacob at census time that year.



He and second wife, Hannah, are buried together.
