From the History of Greene & Jersey Counties, Illinois:
"JEFFERSON COONROD, a son of Rev. Stephen Coonrod, of whom mention ism ade elsewhere, was born May 5, 1823, in Wayne county, Ill. When sixyea rs of age he came with his father to this county. He was reared onhis f ather's farm, receiving only a limited education. He was marriedJune 2 , 1847, to Temperance Drum, born near Carrollton, Dec. 11,1827. She is a d aughter of John and Dillie (Wood) Drum, earlysettlers of Greene county , who resided here until their deaths. Aftermarriage, Mr. Coonrod purc hased 40 acres of land on the northwestquarter of section 22, and went t o work with willing hands, and hisenergy and perseverance have been re warded with success, he being nowthe owner of 475 acres of valuable la nd. For the first purchase hepaid $3 per acre, and for some since that t ime $70 per acre, and heexperienced more difficulty in then paying the f irst named price thanhe did later on in paying the last. He remained o n the farm untilFeb., 1873, when he rented his farm, and purchased a l ot inGreenfield, on which he erected the fine residence in which he no wresides, and is enjoying the fruits of many years labor. Mr. and Mrs.D rum, the parents of Mrs. Coonrod, were natives of North Carolina.Her f ather was a soldier in the war of 1812. They first settled nearCarroll ton, but afterwards moved to Rubicon township, whereTemperance was mar ried. Mr. Coonrod is one of the prominent citizensof Greenfield, and s tands high in the estimation of all who have thepleasure of his acquai ntance, meriting this esteem by his honesty,pleasing address, and geni al manners."
1880 Greenfield, Greene Co, IL. The census that year recorded him asa 5 4 year old farmer, wife Tempianna was 52. Living with them was a33 ye ar old Mary L (unreadable), servant.
