George L. Whitley, 84, of Effingham, departed this life at 7:15 a.m.on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at HSHS St. Anthony’s MemorialHospital in Effingham, IL.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2015, atFirst Church of God, 2600 S. Banker Street, Effingham, with the Rev.C.W. Lewis and Rev. Ed Wojnar officiating. Burial will be inArborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham, with military rites. Visitationwill be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2015, at the church.Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

George was born on July 28, 1931 near Humboldt, Illinois, the son ofGeorge F. and Gladys I. (Galbreath) Whitley. He married Ruth Hooten onFebruary 10, 1957. He was a U.S. Army veteran; retired from EffinghamState Bank and served many area churches as a local pastor. George wasa member and attended the Funkhouser United Methodist Church for manyyears.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth of Effingham; daughters, Lavonne (Bob)Ring and Diane (David) Tieffel, both of Effingham and Darla (Kurt)Miller of Troy; grandchildren: Natalie (Kyle) Stortzum, Kristen(Trent) Kreke, Holly (Jeff) Wallace, Ryan (Ashley) Tieffel,Christopher Miller and Eric Miller. Great-grandchildren: Jordan,Hannah, Gavin and Macey Wallace; Kennedy, Kinsley and Kohen Tieffel;Brady, Addysen and Isley Stortzum; Olivia, Elizabeth and MatthewKreke. Also a brother, Lyle Whitley of Lerna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lavonne.
