1830 Union Twp, Mercer Co, OH. John Vangundy was found there by thec ensus taker with a large family of 2 males under 10 years of age, 1fro m 10 to 15, 1 16-25, John was 30-40, 1 female under 10, 1 at 5-10,1 ag ed 10-15, and 1 also 30-40. Down the road lived Peter Coil,future in- laws of daughter Huldah with Jacob Van Gundy (20-30. Who?)beyond him. J ohn and Jacob were the only ones by the name in thecounty.
1840 Same place. That year he was listed as John W Gundy with 1 maleu nder 5, 1 at 5-10, 2 were 10-15, 1 at 20-30, John was 40-50, 2females u nder 5, 2 at 5-10, 1 at 15-20, and probably Peggy also40-50. Next door w as daughter Jane and Henry Shepherd and two doorsdown was son Samuel. A nother John Gundy was in Dublin twp.
John's will was dated 1/24/1841, probated 4/26/1849, and recorded7/6/1 849. It said:
I John Vangundy of the County of Mercer in the State of Ohio do makean d publish this my last will and testament in manner and formfollowing, t hat is to say,
First it is my will that my funeral expenses and all of my just debtsb e paid
Second I give devise and bequeath to my beloved wife Margaret Vangundy? ?? of her dower the Plantation on which we now reside, situated inthe C ounty of Mercer in the State of Ohio, containing about twohundred seve nteen acres during her natural life and all the livestock, horses, cat tle, sheep, hogs, etc, By me now owned and debtthem on, also all the h ousehold furniture and other items notparticularly named and other wis e disposed of in this will during hernatural life as aforesaid She ho wever first disposing of asufficiency thereto pay my just debts as afo resaid.
At the death of my wife, all the property hereby devised or bequeathedt o her as aforesaid or so much thereof as may remain unexpended to myhe irs, Samuel Vangundy, Jane Sheperd, Washington Vangundy, BransonVangun dy, Joshua Vangundy, Elizabeth Vangundy, Hulda Vangundy, ElbeVangundy, E lmore Vangundy, John Jefferson Vangundy an equal divisionof what remai ns unexpended amongst them all,
And lastly I herby constitute and apoint my said wife MargaretVangundy a nd my said son Washington Vangundy to be executors for thismy last wil l and testiment invoking and annuling all former wills byme made and n olefying and confirming this and no other to be my lastwill and testam ent.
