Notes for Thomas Jefferson VAN GUNDY


Who took in Thomas and Hannah after the death of their parents? Therew ere not with any of the older siblings in 1850.

8/22/1862 He enlisted in Co. H 123, O.V.I,
6/15/1863 In the battle of Winchester, VA he was taken prisoner andin carcerated at Libby prison.
5/15/1864 He was wounded at the battle of New Market, VA.
6/12/1865 He mustered out of service at the close of the war.

1879 Texas Twp, Crawford Co, OH. He bought some land frombrother-in- law, Samuel Dunlap.

His obituary says he was 54 y, 2m, 13d old, making his birth date11/20 /1839.
His obituary said:

Thomas Jefferson Van Gundy
T. Jefferson Van Gundy, formerly of this county and well known int he northern part of the county, died at his home at Thorn Hope,Pulaski c ounty, Indiana, Friday, Feb. 3, 1893, aged 54 years, 2months and 13 da ys.
The deceased was born in Crawford county, O, Nov. 19, 1838 andwas m arried to Avanga Jump, in Nov. 1861. Of this union threechildren were b orn, Isaac J; Anna, now Mrs. George Wildermuth; andLorinda, now Mrs. W m Buck. The children all live near the parentalhome and were with him i n his last sickness.
When our country was in danger, Mr. Van Gundy shouldered hismuske t and went to the front and fought and suffered, that the Unionmight b e sustained. He enlisted in Co. H 123, O.V.I, Aug. 22, 1862.In the ba ttle of Winchester, Virginia, June 15, 1863 he was takenprisoner and s uffered imprisonment in the notorious Libby prison withthe late Captai n D.S. Caldwell and others of his company. He waswounded May 15, 1864 , at the battle of New Market, Virginia. He wasmustered out of the se rvice, at the close of the war, June 12, 1865.
His first wife died April 23, 1888 and he was again married toMrs . Lydia N(?page torn), Feb 3, 1892, who still survives him.
The body was buried under the auspices of the G.A.R. Post, theWin nemas Indiana lodge attending in a body.
He had been suffering for some time before his death with lungtro uble and received a stroke of paralysis, Tuesday, Jan. 31, fromwhich h e never regained consciousness but gradually grew weaker andweaker unt il he peacefully sank to sleep.
He leaves a large circle of friends in this county, whosympathize w ith the bereaved family.
