Notes for James Garfield PURVIS


Descendants said both James and Rebecca were "real nice people."

"He was a quiet man-rarely spoke but had what I considered to be afantastic sense of humor. She (Rebecca) often said her family wasrelated to George Washington thru her mother.

They lived without any of the modern conveniences such as electricity,in a 2-room farm house 5 miles south of Ames Iowa."

Residences & events:

9/12/1918 2 Ames, Story Co, IA. At age 37, he was called to registerfor WWI draft. He verified his birth date as posted and that he was anative born white. His occupation was farmer at Ames. Mrs BellPurvis was his nearest relative, he signed his full name. TheRegistrar's Report said he was medium height and build with blue eyesand dark hair, no physical disabilities. He and brother Lawrenceregistered the same day.
Descendants said "he fell off the roof, took about 2 days beforeRebecca could get him in the house, another day before some one cameby to help her---by then it was too late and he died."
