He served in Co C of the 126th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.

7/29/1870 Town (?) of Jonathan Creek, PO Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.At c ensus time Atwell was a 32 year old farmer but had only personalproper ty worth $500, perhaps in preparation for moving west? Elvirawas 25 a nd they had only 2 children at the time: Walter F, 3, andLee, 1. Nex t door neighbors were Hannah Seass and William Powers.

6/14/1880 Town of Eureka, Greenwood Co, KS. By the next census thefa mily had moved and Atwell had become a carpenter. He was 42,Elvira wa s 34, and the family had grown to include: Walter F, 13;Lee R, 11; Gr acie A, 8; Herbert L, 4; Van R, 2 and Robert, 3 months.

Bef 9/1890 Ellensburg, Kittitas Co, WA when daughter Grace marriedthe re.

6/8/1900 Ellensburg Wd-1, Kittitas Co, WA. That year Atwell was a 54y ear old widow and he and son Charles, 14, lived with son Herbert'sfami ly. Apparently the informant wasn't well acquainted with Atwellas the c ensus said Atwell was born 11/1845 in IN. Atwell had nooccupation.

4/11/1910 S M St, 5-Wd Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA. At age 73 he stilllive d with son Herbert.
The 1900 census says he was born 11/1845 in IN. Every other censussay s he was born about 1838 in KY.
Why did Atwell die in OR when all the children lived elsewhere at thet ime? He had lived with son Herbert for the past 20 years.
