"United Brethren Church in Christ.-The first meeting of this societywa s held in a schoolhouse located on Section -, by Rev. J. Powell, inthe y ear 1849. Two years later, a permanent organization was effectedby Rev . William Mathers, with eleven members, as follows: John Gring,F. Clap saddle, William Van Gundy, Charles Shire, Samuel Swinehart,Jane Swineh art, Martha Brady, John Beek, Margaret Morris, ElizabethNoel, Mary Cra wford and Father Swinehart.

The present number of members is ninety, with the following officers:T rustees-William Van Gundy, P. K. Sheaffer, J. W. Eyestone, WilliamKinl ey and Solomon Downey."

1860 Sycamore Twp, Wyandot Co, OH. That year the census takerrecorde d William just 6 doors from brother George. William was 38, afarmer w ith property valued at $8400/200. Living with him were wifeElizabeth, 3 6, and children: Laury E, 13, James, 10, Josephine, 9,Mary, 6, Alwild a, 3; as well as Benjamin Van Gundy, 21, Mary Burr,52, and Lavina Burr , 27, relationships unstated.

He served as a township official in 1864, 1865, 1877, 1878 andtreasure r in 1874 and 1879-83.

6/27/1870 Sycamore Twp, near Carey, Wyandot Co, OH. The census saidW illiam was a wealthy farmer with property worth over $19,000/2540.He w as 48 years old and wife Elizabeth was 46. Their children wereJames, 2 0, Josephine, 18, Mary, 14, Alwilda, 13, and Ruth, 9. Livingwith them w ere 2 farm laborers: Frances Ludwig, 19, and John Renn,16, as well as L avina Buim, 36, dressmaker.

1884 He was a trustee of the township that year.

William's bio found in the same history says:

"WILLIAM VAN GUNDY was born in Ross County, Ohio, September 21, 1821.H is father, Michael Van Gundy was a native of Pennsylvania, and ofScotc h descent, and his mother, Hannah (Eyestone) Van Gundy, was anative of O hio, and of German ancestry. They were married in RossCounty, and move d to this township about 1836; he first entered 320acres, and 160 a fe w years later. Their children were William,Elizabeth, Abraham, George a nd Susan; Abraham and the latterdeceased. The father died in 1859; the m other in 1848. William VanGandy, our subject, was married, February 25 , 1844, to ElizabethPatten, of Crawford County. She was a native of Vi rginia, anddaughter of William and Mary (Bishop) Patten, natives of Ir eland andVirginia respectively. They resided for some time at Martinsb urg, andthen removed to Baltimore, where he was employed as a weaver t ill1823, in which year he died, leaving one child (the wife of Mr. Van Gundy), who died in this township December 9, 1882. Mrs. Pattonreturned t o Virginia, after the death of her husband, and about 1831came to Ohio w ith her brother, and married in Ross County and movedto Crawford Count y, where she died August 8, 1867. Mr. and Mrs. VanGundy had nine child ren-Lewis W., Laura A., James A., Josephine A.,George F., H. Mary, Alw ilda A., Lucretia and Ruth. Lewis, George,Lucretia, an infant, and Mrs . Laura Lee, when twenty-five years ofage, are deceased In 1850, Mr. V an Gundy purchased 160 acres, onwhich he resided about three years, pu rchasing eighty acres in 1853,and residing on the latter farm till the p resent time. In 1860 to1865, he purchased 160 more, now owning 400 acr es, valued at $80 to$120 per acre. He has his farm well improved, and i s now completingan elegant brick residence at a cost of $4,000; he for merly dealtsomewhat in blooded horses, and is now gi ving considerable a ttentionto the raising of thoroughbred Spanish Merino sheep, and blood edhogs, their stock all being registered. Mr. Van Gundy has hold the office of township Treasurer for several years, and is a prominentmembe r of the United Brethren Church at Sycamore, his wife alsohaving been a f aithful member till her death. Prior to her marriage,she was of the Me thodist Episcopal persuasion. Mr. Van Gundy was aDemocrat for his firs t few votes, but favored Republcanism for manyyears; he is now an acti ve Prohibitionist. His son, James A., is hispartner in the stock-raisi ng business, in which they are extensivelyengaged."
