"SAMUEL ARMSTRONG, son of James and Nancy (Leman) Armstrong, was borni n Armstrong County, Penn., April 29, 1819. His parents were nativesof I reland and Pennsylvania respectively, the father emigrating about1775, a nd settled in Armstrong County, where he followed farmingforty or fift y years. He married Nancy Leman, of Westmoreland County,and they were t he parents of fourteen children-John, James, David,Andrew, Thomas, Len on, Elizabeth, Daniel, Mary, Margaret, Samuel,Joseph, Robert and Willi am. Daniel, Joseph, Margaret and Samuel arethe only ones now living. T he parents died in Armstrong County, Penn.Samuel, the subject of this n otice, came to this county in 1847, andpurchased eighty acres of land i n Eden Township, where he has sinceresided. He was married Jan. uary 2 7, 1851, to Mary Jane Mosters,daughter of Joel and Martha (Dun. lap) M osters, and a native of NewJersey They had eight childrenLucy, Warner E ., Frank, Avilla, Martha,Thomas, Nellie B. and Dalba. The deceased are L ucy, Frank, Thomas andDalba. Mrs. Armstrong's death occurred March, 18 71, and her husbandwas married in June, 1872, to Julia Mosters, sister o f first wife,and one child was born to them, Fonie, now nine years of a ge. Hissecond wife died in May, 1874, and Mr. Armstrong was married September 19,1875, to Maria Van Gundy, daughter of Michael (Ford) VanGun dy, and a native of this county. Her parents were natives of RossCount y, Ohio, and had three children-Theodore, Maria and Enoch, thelatter d eceased. The father died in 1848, and the mother in 1856. Inpolitics, M r. A. is a Democrat. His land is valued at $80 to $90 peracre. His fir st wife was a member Of the Methodist Epis copal Church;his second of t he United Brethren Church, and himself and third wifehold membership i n the Methodist Episcopal Church."
