CHARLES T. GUNDY, county attorney of Atchison County and a well knowna nd prominent lawyer of the city, is of old Holland Dutch lineage.His g reat-grandfather, William Gundy, came from Holland and was aColonial s ettler in Pennsylvania. He went with the Pennsylvaniatroops to help wi n independence during the Revolutionary war. Mr.Gundy's grandfather, J acob Gundy, was born in Pennsylvania in 1800,and was a pioneer settler i n Scotland County, Missouri, where hefollowed farming until his death i n 1892. He was enrolled for serviceduring the Black Hawk Indian war.

Charles T. Gundy was born in Scotland County, Missouri, February 10,18 78, and his early life was spent in the county where hisgrandfather ha d been a pioneer. His father, George Gundy was born inScotland County i n 1845, grew up and married there, and has madefarming his regular occ upation. He is now living at Memphis,Missouri, at the age of seventy-t wo. In 1863 he enlisted in theSecond Missouri Cavalry for service in t he Union Army, and whenGeneral Price made his raid through Missouri to ward the close of thewar he assisted in repelling that invasion. In th at campaign he waswounded in the arm. He is a republican, a member of t he BaptistChurch, and of the Masonic fraternity. George Gundy married M argaretNeedham, who was born in Scotland County, Missouri, in 1858. Of t heirchildren Charles T. is the oldest. Lewis W. is a farmer in Scotlan dCounty. Jacob C. is also a Scotland County farmer. Corda is the wife of Grover Crawford, a farmer in Scotland County. Pearl and Merle,twins, a re still at home.

Charles T. Gundy had a rural environment as a boy, attended thecountry s chools of Scotland County, and remained at home on hisfather's place u ntil he was nineteen years of age. For four years hewas a teacher in t he rural schools. While teaching he took up thestudy of law, and was f irst admitted to the bar at Memphis, Missouri.He practiced two years a t Memphis, from 1905 to 1907, and while thereserved as city attorney. M r. Gundy left Memphis to accept agovernment position at Washington, D. C ., and while in that city heavailed himself of the exceptional opportu nities to further perfecthimself in the law. He attended the night sch ool of the NationalUniversity of Law, and in 1908 received the degrees o f LL. B. and LL.M. and was admitted to the District of Columbia bar. I n 1908 Mr.Gundy went to Keokuk, Iowa, and for two years had charge of t he farmloan department of the State Central Savings Bank of that city.

He has been a resident of Atchison since 1910, and in the past sevenye ars has built up a large general-practice as a lawyer. His officesare i n the Blair Building, and his home is at 937 Santa Fe Street.Mr. Gundy s erved as judge of the City Court of Atchison five years,and in the fal l of 1916 was elected county attorney. He is arepublican, a member of t he Baptist Church and of the Kansas BarAssociation, and is affiliated w ith the Masonic Order, theIndependent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevo lent and Protective Orderof Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the A ncient Order of UnitedWorkmen and the Domestic Workers. Mr. Gundy marr ied in New York Cityin 1909 Miss Eleanor McCormick, whose home was in W ashington, D. C.Her parents were John and Margaret (Broslon) McCormick , both nowdeceased, her father for many years conducting a mercantile establishment at Washington."
