Notes for Jacob VAN GUNDY

1828 "When 21 years of age he received from his father 105 acres ofth e homestead and commenced farming on his own account."

1830 Buffalo Twp, Union Co, PA. The census listed Jacob Gundy,brothe rs George and John, and their father Christian, in the sametownship. J acob was 20-30 years old, the family consisted of 1 maleage 10-15 (who ?), 1 female under 5, and 1 at 15-20.

1840 Same place. Jacob Gundy lived next door to brother George atcen sus time. He was 30-40 years old with a household that included 1male u nder 5, 1 at 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 at 5-0, and 1 age20-30. On the p revious page were brothers John and Adam.

Union Co, PA. His biography said he was "among the representative meno f Union Co, PA, who have made agriculture a study and a success."

Date unknown, Washington DC. Jacob was sent as a delegate torepresent h is state in a convention for organizing a NationalAgricultural Society . While there he met Daniel Webster, Stephen ADouglas, and other famo us men.

10/16/1850 E Buffalo Twp, Union Co, PA. At census time farmer JacobG undy, 52, was already a wealthy man with $8260 in real estate. Hehad a l arge family consisting of Rachael, 39, Leah E, 19, John C,14,Rachael J , 11, Sarah C. 8, Franklin J, 5, and William F, 3. Theylived between 2 B rown families.

1853 From the Annals of Buffalo Valley: "The Union Countyagricultura l society was formed at the courthouse at New Berlin,Saturday, Novembe r 13 the East Buffalo society, which
had been in existence for a year, passed a resolution calling themeeti ng for such organization. Martin Dreisbach presided at thismeeting, Sa muel Weirick acting as secretary, and Jacob Gundypresented a form of c onstitution, which, after several amendments,was adopted. Jacob Gundy w as elected president of the society"

7/20/1860 E Buffalo twp, Union Co, PA. As Jacob Gundy, the censuslis ted him at age 52, Rachel at 49, with children Franklin J P, 15,Willia m L, 13, and Emma D, 5. Also living there was an 18 year oldservant, B arbra Horstettler (sp?). Jacob was a farmer with a largeamount of pro perty valued at $20,080/1300. Next door neighbors wereJohn Brown and W illiam Ketchum. Four doors down the road was thefamily of Simon Gundy a nd in the same area were other Gundyfamilies....Adam, Ellis and John.

6/30/1870 Limestone Twp, PO Lewisburg, Union Co, PA. The censustaker r ecorded Jacob, 61, as a very wealthy farmer with propertyworth $23,650 /9550. Wife Rachel was 60 and children still at homewere Pollick, 25, a nd Emma, 15. Living with them were 14 year oldOliver D'Wise and Willi am Gundy, 23, both farm laborers. Was thatson, William?

6/8/1880 Same place. That year Jacob was 72, and retired. Rachel was6 9 and in the house were children James O, 35, and Emma D, 25 as wellas C harles A Penny, 16, relative of daughter-in-law Clara Gundy.Several Wo lf familes were neighbors.

Descendants said he sold the farm in his old age and moved toLewisburg , Union Co, PA.

The 1885 history of Susquehanna & Juniata Valley says Jacob's twoyoung est children are still alive.
