john married margret (mary) sidenbender. they had a son, adam who wasb orn on 07/18/1823, in ross, co ohio. adam died on 05/11/1897.

adam van gundy settles in rock creek township, carroll co, indiana in1 843. he was one of carroll counties prominent citizens and waspreside nt of the agricultural society in 1872. he built the bigbrick house o n the south bank of the wabash river by gundy's island,nw of rockfield ( known as tiptonsport) and later built a home on thewest edge of rockfi eld. after the first elevator in rockfieldburned, adam built another e levator. he received 1st premium forraising corn (109 bushels per acr e).

adam's first wife was elizabeth, born 1822, died 1849. they had 2chil dren, william and albert, each dying at 3 months of age. his 2ndwife w as barbra holman may, who had 5 children. they were married inoctober 1 850. adam and barbra had 3 children: willard, nelson andjulia van gu ndy....."

"The maternal grandfather of Mrs. Roach (Georgia Newell) was Adam VanG undy, a very early settler in Carroll county, Indiana, and one ofthe p rominent citizens of the county
during his day and generation, and lived to be a very old man. Of hisc hildren, Nelson W. served as sheriff of Carroll county for twoterms. T he other children were Willard and Julia.

9/23/1850 Carroll Co, IN. At census time Adam was living with secondc ousin Barbara May, 39, and her children: Phillip, 19, David, 18,Willi am, 10, Mary, 8. Adam Vangundy was 27 years old with theoccupation of l aborer. He was the only one by the name in thecounty. Three doors dow n the road was a Sidenbender family.

Again from local history:

"The second fair was held at Camden, in October, 1853. The ground wase nclosed in a high board fence. The premium list was increased, andhigh er prizes offered. As the best corn raiser, Adam VanGundy carriedoff t he prize. He raised one hundred and nine bushels of corn peracre on th e Wabash river bottoms."

6/12/1860 Rock Creek Twp, PO Rockfield, Carroll Co, IN. That yearthe c ensus said Adam was 37, "Barbary" was 45 (actually 47). He as afarmer , his large estate totaled $24,000/3285. Living with them wereBarbara 's children, Wm May, 20, Mary May, 16, both "serving," andtheir childr en together: Willard, 8, Nelson, 7, and Julia Ann, 4.Next door was the M unday family, Adam's future wife, and on the otherside was John Fore. M ale C Van Gundy, 19, born OH, lived in the sametownship with the Jonat han Rollins family as a day laborer. Who washe?

And again from the History:

"ROCKFIELD
A village in Carroll county, on the Toledo, Wabash & Western railroad,t wenty-three miles from Lafayette. It has one church, good school,&c. P opulation about 200.

7/12/1870 Same place. The census that year called him "Ad" Vangundya t age 47, a wealthy livestock dealer with property values of $55,000/1 4,000, quite a large amount for that day. Wife Barbara was 55and the c hildren were: Willard, 19; Nelson, 17; and Julia, 14.Step-son William M ay and cousin Nelson Van Gundy, 39, lived in thesame area..

Another excerpt from the above history:

"In 1870 a new Carroll County Agricultural Association was organized.A dam VanGundy was the president."

1880 Still there. At census time Adam was a 56 year old farmer witht hird wife Mary, 46, (the lady next door from 20 years ago) andstep-dau ghter, Margaret Munday, 14. Next door neighbors were WilliamDavidson a nd Albert Anderson and two doors down was the family ofNelson Van Gund y, 49, with William May farther down the road with alarge family.
Other family listings have his birthdate as 1/22/1804 but the datepost ed is from cemetery records.
His death date has been recorded in other listings as 3/1887. Hiswill l isted only Barbara's three children.
