At census time in 1860, he and brother, James, were the only ones ofhi s father's first family still at home.
8/25/1864 Grant enlisted in Co C, 2nd IL Cavalry for the Civil War.
He re-enlisted with Co B, 32nd IL Cavalry.
6/11/1865 He mustered out of service.
1870 Greenup, Cumberland Co, IL. He, at age 24, and Mary, 18, hadone l ittle boy at census time, Theodore, 1. Grant's occupation wasfarm lab orer.
The newspaper reported his death:
The death by lightning of Grant Davee, recently, calls to mind thefact t hat of five sons, the Rev. Ben Davee, who grew to manhood, butone rema ins; and he unfortunately is a cripple for life-some timelast winter, w e believe, a tree having fallen on him, breaking hislegs.

John Knotts in the township of Granville in said county of Jasper onth e 15th day of July 1874 before Lewis J. Ryan a Justice Of The Peacein a nd for said county upon the view of the body of Grant Davee.there and t here lying dead upon the aoths of John Benson,
Jacob F. Hiles, William J. Swope. A.L. Phillips. S. Boyd. Z.H.McCubbin s, N.S. Bridgman,
John J. Foutz, T.S. Odell, William Eyers, Jeniah Harper, and B. W.Meth eny, good and lawful
men of said county who being duly sworn to inquire on the part of thep eople of the state of
Illinois into all circumstances attending the death of said GrantDavee a nd by whom or what
the same was produced and in what manner and when and where the saidGr ant Davee
came to his death do say upon their oath that the said Grant Davee waso n the 15th day of
July 1874 in the county afore said and in the township afore said wask illed by a stroke of lightning. Of which stroke of lightning saidGran t Davee there and then died and so the jury afore said upon theiroaths a fore said do say that the afore said Grant Davee in the mannerand by t he means afore said casually and accidently and by misfortunecame to h is death and not otherwise.
In witness whereof the jurors afore said have to this verdict settheir h ands on the day of this
inquision afore said.
