"To the honourable, the speaker and both both houses of assembly: Wethe inhabitants of the Count of Culpepper, viewing apart of publickproperty retained in the hand of the Episcopalian Church, the remainsof an Ecclesiastical Establishmen which was procured at the Expense ofthe Community at Large. We therefore Pray tht your honourable bodywould pass an Act for the Sale of the Glebe And appertainences; andfor the opening of the church doors for the use of every ReligiousDenomination and the money arising from the sale htereof to be laidout for the Public Good as your wisdom shall see best and we yourhumble partintioners shall Pray."
The American Episcopal Church was the American version of the Churchof England. During English rule landowners had been required to paytaxes to maintain the church and most resented it. This petitionasked for permission for inter-denominational use of the church andthe money from the sale of other church owned properties be used forthe benefit of the community that had paid in the first place.
