Notes for John Purdy REYNOLDS


From the Handbook of Texas Online:

"REYNOLDS, JOHN PURDY (1806-1836). John Purdy Reynolds, Alamodefender, s on of Judge David and Mary (Purdy) Reynolds, was born atCedar Springs, M ifflin County, Pennsylvania, on March 7, 1806. Hegraduated from Jeffer son Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1827 andpracticed medicine in Mi fflin County for seven years. Reynoldstraveled to Texas in 1835 with W illiam McDowell, and the two joinedthe Volunteer Auxiliary Corps of Te xas on January 14, 1836, atNacogdoches. They then went to San Antonio d e Béxar as members ofCapt. William B. Harrison'sqv company, which incl uded DavidCrockett.qv They arrived at Bexar on or about February 9, 18 36. It isnot known if Reynolds worked as a surgeon in the Alamo garris on. Hedied in the battle of the Alamoqv on March 6, 1836. "

"William McDowell, Alamo defender, son of Col. John McDowell ofKishaco quillas, Pennsylvania, was born at Mifflin County,Pennsylvania, in 179 4. He left Tennessee for Texas in 1835 with JohnPurdy Reynolds."

The DeWitt Colony Alamo Defenders:

"Amos Pollard, 32, born 29 Oct 1803 in Ashburnham, WorcesterCo, MA,was r egimental surgeon for the Alamo garrison and commanded medicalstaff co mprised of Dr. John W. Thompson, Dr. Edward F. Mitchison, Dr.William D . Howell, Dr. John Purdy Reynolds and medical studentWilliam Depriest S utherland."

And in the book by Walter Lord, A Time To Stand is:

"The cast of characters includes not only famous figures like JimBowie b ut unknown, unsung men: John Purdy Reynolds, the wanderingPennsylvania s urgeon"

In the John G Tower Library of Southwestern University of TX:

"Among the gems of the collection are a page from a Gutenberg Bible,th e Herman Melville collection, medical books of Alamo defender JohnPurd y Reynolds...."
