David may have gone west with cousins, Hiram and William Van Gundy, int heir quest for gold as there are court records for him at Gilroy,CA, t he same place where Hiram was married.

Page 639-640 David Zuck. This worthy pioneer, who has given two sonsto t he Legislature of California, was born in Ross county, Ohio,January 30 , 1808, where he was educated and resided until February,1835, at whic h time he moved to Marion county, and for five yearsengaged in farming . Thence he proceeded to Caledonia, in the samecounty, and combined a m ercantile and tailoring business. Two yearsafter, he embarked in hotel k eeping, seceding from the first namedand continued it until his determ ination to proceed to California wasarrived at. Early in the ever memo rable year of 1849 Mr. Zuck enteredinto a contract with General George R owe to accompany a party acrossthe plains to the Pacific. They were fi tted out at St. Joseph,Missouri, and a start was effected April 12th o f that year. All wentwell with our travelers until the Platte river wa s reached, on June1st, when a raid was made upon them by Indians, and t wo of their oxenstolen. After a chase of five miles the depredators we re overhauledand called upon to surrender, when a skirmish ensued. One o f theparty, Dr. Fisher, had a horse shot under him, and another, Ben Toppin, was wounded by an arrow piercing his thigh. Four of the redskin s were made to bite the dust. The remainder of the journey wasmade wit hout further mishap, and Mr. Zuck believes that even themisadventure t hat happened might have been avoided. On October 26,1849, the subject o f our narrative arrived at the mines on the Yubariver, and there remai ned until January 28, 1850, when he moved upthe stream, to Bullard's B ar, but had poor success. In December,1850, he worked as a farm labore r on the Horn Cut, and four monthslater purchased a ranch. Hitherto he h ad had no financial success;now he essayed practical farming. Purchasi ng two hundred acres ofland in partnership with R. F. Piat, he located a bout fourteen milesfrom Marysville, on the Horn Cut, and there took up h is residence.Mr. Zuck now determined to visit the East. He therefore s ailed fromSan Francisco, December 5, 1851, in the steamer 'Golden Gate ,' on herfirst voyage, and arrived in New York on New Year's morning, 1 852.Having recrossed the plains, he arrived on his farm, near Marysvil le,on September 17th, of that year, whence he removed to Santa Clara county, November 7, 1853, and on the following day located on theproper ty he occupies, now comprising eight hundred and forty acres,where he i s engaged in farming and stock raising. Married, April 11,1833, Maria E liza (sic) Linton, a native of Ohio, who died May 10,1881, b. whom he h as: Mary Ann, born March 25, 1834; John, bornNovember 5, 1835, died Ma rch 22, 1867; [The Hon. John Zuck waselected to the House of assembly o f the State of California, on theRepublican ticket, September 4, 1861, w hen he polled one thousandseven hundred and sixty-seven votes, being f orty-five more than theHon. Charles Maclay, Republican, and one hundre d thirty-one more thanthe Hon. J. Brown, Republican. He died full of p romise, and muchregretted.] Harriet, born May 10, 1838; William H., bo rn November 16,1841, who died December 27, 1863; James C., born Januar y 14, 1844;[The Hon. James C. Zuck is the confrere of the Hon. G. F. B aker inthe present Senate of the State of California.] Albion Theo., b ornMay 30, 1846, who died April 29, 1870.

Note: David's first cousins, Hiram and William VanGundy, also came toC alifornia in the Gold Rush and lived next to him in the 1860 Census.Th ey were the sons of Daniel VanGundy, brother of David's mother AnnaVan Gundy Zuck. There are several files on WorldConnect with theVanGundys.

Note: 2 "David Zuck was of Pennsylvania ancestry, and a native ofOhio. H e came to California in 1849, making the trip overland. For atime he w orked in the mines, but in the early part of 1851 gave upmining. He th en located a farm on the Honcut, about fourteen milesfrom Marysville. I n the fall of the same year he returned to Ohio,and the next year brou ght his family to California across the plains,and was four months mak ing the trip. He went upon his farm, nearMarysville, and remained ther e until the fall of 1863, when heremoved to Gilroy with his family, an d located on the San YsidroRancho, where he yet resides. His wife died i n 1881."
