The second and present wife of Rev. Abraham Cartlich, was Miss JaneVan G undy, of Ross county, whom he married in 1854. Her father wasRev. John V an Gundy, who labored as a minister in the MethodistEpiscopal Church f or thirty years, and after removal from Rosscounty, Ohio, where he pos sessed large landed estates, died inAtchison county, Missouri. He sett led in Ohio in 1806, and served inthe War of 1812. Her grand-father wa s also named John Van Gundy. Hermother's name was Margaret Search, who se father was Thomas Search.Margaret died on one of her husband's far ms near Chillicothe, in1833, when Jane was in her seventh year. Her br others, all of whomare prosperous, are Jonas, St. Joseph's, Missouri; a nd James, John,William and Samuel, near Milton, Atchison county, Miss ouri.Tradition, which seems well founded, ascribed to the ancestry of t hisVan Gundy family close official relations to the Crown of Prussia, and a rupture of these relations which sent it to Pennsylvania, andthen ce to Ohio.

"On the 28th of March, 1861, Mr. Scarlett was united in marriage toSar ah Vangundy, who was born February 5, 1843, in Ross county, Ohio,a dau ghter of John and Lea Vangundy, of Pennsylvania. Her father wasborn J anuary 13, 1799, and was twice married. On the 24th of March,1821 he w edded Margaret Search, whose death occurred July 6, 1833,and on the 11 th of January, 1835, he was again married. His secondwife, Lea Vangun dy, was born May 11, 1809. John Vangundy the fatherof Mrs. Scarlett, m oved to Ross county Ohio, where he lived until1859, when he located in C lark township, Atchison county. He built alarge gristmill at Milton, w hich he ran for several years and thensold to a son. He also owned la rge tracts of land. He was aMethodist minister and in Missouri was a l ocal preacher. He diedAugust 7, 1874, at Milton, and his death was gr eatly mourned by allwho knew him. His second wife died October 4, 189 9, at the age ofninety years. The children by his first wife were: Jo nas, James,John, and Jane, who married Mr. Cartlich, a Methodist minis ter. Hischildren by his second marriage were: Samuel, of Kansas; Mar garet,the wife of N. Little; Sarah, the wife of our subject; and Willi am, afarmer of Atchison county. "

T here is a record of John Vangundy in 2 Regiment(Ferguson's) of Ohio Mi litia, inducted and discharged as a private.In the same regiment were B enjamin and Cornelius.
1830 Springfield, Ross Co, OH. The census taker found him livingjust d own the road from his father. In his house were 1 male under 5years o f age, 2 at 5-10, John was 30-40, 1 female at 5-10, and 1 aged20-30. B etween him and his father were William "Sarch " and cousinJohn Zuck.
1840 Same place. That year at census time John was 40-50 and hisfami ly consisted of 1 male under 5, 3 at 10-15, 1 female under 5, 1was 15- 20, and 1 at 30-40.
9/10/1850 Still there. In that census John was one of the biggestlan d holders of the time with $15,000 in real estate. He was 51years old a nd Leah was 44. They had a large family: Jonas, 28; June(Jane), 25; J ohn, 21; Margaret, 14; Lawrence (?), 11; Sarah, 7;Rachel, 3; and Willi am, 1/12. Living with them were John Bower, 19,laborer, and Mary Ring , also 19, no occupation. Neighbors wereCutrights and Remleys.
Abt 1851 Nodaway Co, MO. Most of his family moved west with him.
1859 Atchison Co, MO. He helped organize the Methodist EpiscopalChur ch and among the charter members were: John, Leah, M A VanGundy, S Va n gundy and M H Van Gundy.
6/1/1860 Irish Grove, Clark Twp, Atchison Co, MO. That year thecensu s said John Van Gundy was 61, a farmer, with a large amount ofproperty , $15,000/15,000. Wife Lea, was 57, children living therewere: Sarah , 16; Rachel, 12; William, 10; Margaret Little, 23; andher husband Nel son, 29, and their daughter Florence, 3. Littlefamilies lived on both s ides of them.
From Atchison Co, MO Clark Townships:
"John Seymour, who settled here in 1842, made the first wagon that wasm ade in the county, all hand work. About this period, Dr. WilliamMann p ut up a water power saw and grist mill, about a fourth of amile from t he present site of Van Gundy's Mill, on the waters of BigTarkio. This m ill, several years after, passed into the hands ofJames A. Curry, who, a fter operating it for some time, sold the millto John Van Gundy. At th e expiration of two years, Van Gundy & Co.tore down the old structure o f this mill, and erected near its site,at a cost of $15,000, the prese nt water power flouring mill whichoperates three run of burrs. This wa s about the year 1863 or 1864,and in 1866, he added a saw mill.

"Milton was laid out by John Van Gundy, Sr., and wife. On the 20th ofN ovember, 1870, there was filed in the circuit clerk's office ofAtchiso n County, a plat of Van Gundy & Company's addition to the townof Milto n in the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Sec.9, Twp. 63 N , R. 30 W. On the establishment of the town in 1867,Irish Grove post-o ffice was moved from its location about a fourth ofa mile distant, and i ts name changed to Milton, that of the new town,in which it was locate d."
8/21/1870 Clark Twp, PO Rockport, Atchison Co, MO. Farmer JohnVangun dy, 72, had a large estate by census time that year, valued at$18,000/ 6000. His wife's name was Elizabeth (?), age 61. SonWilliam, 20, als o a farmer, was still at home plus 13 year old Laura(probably Florence ) Little, and 20 year old Nelson Ady, farm laborer.In the same area wa s daughter Rachel Williams and family.
