When their mother died, both Mattie and brother, John, went to livewit h their Neal grandparents. Following their deaths, they livedwith Unc le George and Eliza Neal, where they were both listed in the1860 and 1 870 census records.
Her death record says her mother was Mary Painter but unless herfather h ad divorced Rachel Neal, she would have been her mother.
