5-2-1864 Ross Co, OH. At age 18 he enlisted in the Civil War as a100 d ay man with Co D 149th. He was among those taken prisoner on7/9/1864 b ut it must have been a short stay as he was dischargedshortly after on 8 /30/1864.
He owned several acres of land in the county, some acquired from thego vernment, possibly as payment for war service.
7/29/1870 Harrison Twp, PO Richmondale, Ross Co, OH. He was listedin t hat census index as Austine Vangundy, 26, the original is iffy.The onl y other one in the house was wife Mary, 21. He was a farmhand but did h ave property worth $2500/300. Down the road wasbrother Wesley.
6/1/1880 Same place. The census taker recorded Austin at age 36,Mary a t 30. They had children: Eliza, 3, John 2, and Viola, 3/12.Austin wa s a farmer, next door was brother Wesley's family.
6/1/1900 Still there. By the next census time, the family changedgre atly. Austin, 56, and Mary C, 50, had been married 31 years, shehad b irthed 4 children, all living. In the household were son John,22, his w ife Celia E, 17, and their son David C, 2m, nephew ArthurVan Gundy, 15 , and daughters Lottie, 14, and Ola, 20. (Arthur wasthe son of Cary b y his first wife and since he had remarried, perhapsArthur and the ste p-mother clashed.) Austin was a farmer, John afarm laborer. Sister A manda lived next door with the family ofbrother Cary. Two doors down o n the other side was daughter Elizaand George Blaum.

That year in thecensus Austin was 6 6, Mary C was 60, daughter Lottie, 24, was stillat home and widowed so n-in-law George N Blann, 41 was there with histwo children, Florence, 1 1, and Mabel, 6. Austin and Mary had beenmarried 40 years with 5 chil dren but only 3 still lived. He wasretired with his own income, Georg e was a general farmer, perhapstaking over Austin's farm? Living next d oor was Amanda Vangundy,Austin's spinster sister.
