Notes for Joseph Sr * VAN GUNDY

This Joseph & 2 others, also denoted by * in their names, have beentho roughly researched by the PA genealogy society. However, Ibelieve inf ormation between this Joseph and an older man of the samename has been i ntermingled and needs to be sorted out.

It has not been determined exactly who Joseph's parents were but hecou ld not be the son of Peter, as evidenced by comparing agesaccording to P eter's estate settlement and the marriage with widowShonauer. Joseph h as been placed in this family because David had adaughter, Magdalena, w ho married 4/21/1755, also in Lancaster Co,making David the right age a nd in the right vicinity to be Joseph'sfather. The only other possibi lity is one Hans Gunde, a member ofthe German Baptist Brethren from Cr eyfelt (Ger), who arrived inPhiladelphia in 1729 and was living in Ger mantown in 1733.

This branch of the family dropped the Van and went by Gundy only.

Why are there 2 daughters named Catherine?

Residences & events in Joseph's life:

A deed on that date mentions that Joseph" VonGundy" was named in the 1763 will of Jacob "Shonower" along withJac ob Erb/Erp and Jacob Sencenich/Sansinish.as executors of hisestate. 3/9/1775 Joseph bought 2 more tracts, called Verona and Veroli, eachw ith 42 acres and adjacent to what he already owned, from a JacobArmbr ister. These tracts were also patented to him 4/1776.

11/11/1777 Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA. Joseph took the Oath ofAlle giance as a resident of the area. The family probably had fledback to s afer territory, along with many other settlers, due to thenumerous Ind ian forays into the Susquehanna and Juniata valleys inthe late 1770s. I t was said he commanded a company in Gen JohnSullivan's expedition aga inst the Indians in PA and NY but recordshave not been found to verify t hat. There were, in the spring of1779, many able bodied men in the Su squehanna Valley preparing toenter "boat service, " the convoying of S ullivan's commisary up thenorth branch of the Susquehanna River.

1787 Penns Twp, Snyder Co, PA. That was the last year Joseph's namea ppeared on the county tax rolls as a landowner there, noted as anonres ident for the past 3 years.

8/1787 Northumberland Co, PA. A suit against Joseph for a debt of$20 0 was brought by executors of Hannah Lethgo's estate. Joseph hadgiven a m ortgage in that amount to Hannah but failed to make payment. The case w as continued, Joseph confessed judgement 2/1790, he filedno contest 5/ 1790, and on 8/1790 the court docket states: "witnessnot to be found. " The case was finally decided against Joseph andthe sheriff was orde red to sell the 4 parcels of land in Penns Twp,at public vendue. This w as done on 8/3/1791, Thomas Duncan being thepurchaser. This was the l ast record found for this Joseph Van Gundy.
DAR records claim his birth year was 1742.
DAR records claim he died 1795. However, there has been muchconjecture as to when and where he died, to date no records have beenfound to verify any of them. Egle said he received land in the NewPurchase for services rendered in the Am Rev as a lieutenant in acompany of "associators" and that he died in Lincoln Co, KY, in 1805.A John "VanCounty" does appear in a Lincoln Co, KY, tax record of4/3/1790, but kinship with this Joseph has not been established.

He was not listed in the 1790 census.

He was most likely already deceased when two of his daughterspurchased land in their own names in 1797, listing their currentresidence as Bethel Twp. It has been assumed they had been living athome, then following Joseph's death, decided to move nearer sister,Catherine, and her family.
