Notes for Mary VAN GUNDY

Were Mary and Elizabeth twins? They named each other in their wills.

Apparently Mary never married, she was Mary Gundy the rest of herlife.

4/5/1797 Dauphin Co, PA. "Thomas Ridge and Margaret, his wife, toEli zabeth Gundy and Mary Gundy, both of Bethel Township, spinsters, alot a nd one-story log house." They bought the property at 129 WalnutStreet , Harrisburg, probably because their father had died and theydecided t o move nearer their married sister, Catherine. It wasunusual for wome n to buy property in their own names in those days, unless there was no m an to take care of them.

After Elizabeth married, she sold her share to Mary 3/9/1801.

1800 Harrisburg, Dauphin Co, Pa. Mary Gundy was head of thehousehold t here that year. The family consisted of 1 male under 10years of age, 2 f emales at 16-25 (Mary and sister Elizabeth), and 1over 45 (probably th eir mother). Two doors down was Howard Dubbs.A Michael Gund lived a t Anvil, same county.

3/9/1801 Sister Elizabeth married and transferred her half interestin t he Harrisburg property to Mary.

1803 She and her mother served as administrators of her brotherJoseph 's estate.

1810 Same place. Although Mary was head of the house, others wereliv ing with her that may have been overseeing her welfare. Livingthere w ere 1 male under 10, 1 aged 10-15, 1 at 26-45, 2 females aged10-15, an d Mary, also 26-45.

1820 Still there. That year Mary lived alone at age 26-45.

1830 Still there. It was a family of women at census time: 1 femalea t 15-20-, 1 at 20-30, and Mary at 40-50.

1840 Harrisburg North Ward. The census says Mary was 50-60 and had 1l ittle girl 5-10 years old living with her.

10/14/1850 Same place. That year Mary was 70 years old with realesta te worth $1800. Living with her was Mary Isett, 19, probably arelativ e of sister Elizabeth but too young to be her daughter .

Early 1857 She had the body of brother Joseph moved.
Some say she was born 1769 but she was 20 when confirmed, making herbi rth year 1775. The 1850 census listed her age as 70, making it1780 bu t perhaps she was cheating a little!
It is not known when her will was written but it was recorded3/27/1857 w ith John Young as executor. It gave "the balance of mypersonal estate t o Susanna Lebrun, daughter of my sister Elizabeth."
Also buried in Mary's lot is a George S Gundy who died 9/1817 at 22yrs . He has never been identified but he was too old to have been anephe w by Joseph, Jr, and the children of Jacob are well documented.Perhaps h e was the son of one of the Gundy daughters.
