KS According to the obit of sister Sarah Whitehall, Samuel and twobrothers were pioneers in KS.

7/4/1860 Forest Hills, Breckenridge Co, KS. The census recordedSamuel at age 33, a farmer with property valued at $2000/500. WifeMary A was 26 and the children were: Edward, 5, Charles F, 3,Margaret, 2, and Jenny, 1 month. Also living there was Wm Middleton,26, a farmer from England. Brother David and his family lived in thesame area, they the only ones by the name in the state and probablythe ones mentioned in the Whitehall obit.

7/9/1870 Independence, Montgomery Co, KS. Still moving, the censusrecorded only S at age 44, a farmer whose farm was worth $1800. WifeM A w as 37 and their children were Edward, 15, Chas, 13, Maggie, 11,Jennie, 1 0, Saml, 8, female L (Libbie), 6, and Frank, 2. They alsohad a 23 year old farm hand living there.

6/2/1880 Baxter Springs City, Cherokee Co, KS. By the next censusSamuel had changed occpuations to carpenter. He was 54 and wife"Marian" ( Marianne?) was 43. The family consisted of Maggie, 21,Jenny, 19, Samu el, 17, Libbie, 16, Frank, 11, and Fred, 9.

1904 History of Cherokee County, KS states that Samuel Van Gundy was awell known citizen of Colorado, who for 20 years was a justice of thepeace in that State.

6/7/1900 Same place. That year Samuel and Mary Ann lived alone. Hew as 74 and had apparently retired. She was 67. They had beenmarried 46 years, had 9 children but only 6 remained alive, all ofwhich must have moved away as none lived in KS.
If he was 41 in 1860, his birth year would have been 1819.
Samuel died at the home of his son in Whitt, TX.
Inscribed on the top of his stone is the freemason symbol. He sharesthe stone with wife Mary and infant sons, Harry and David Walter.
He was living there at the time of the death of sister SarahWhitehall.
