Notes for Daniel WEYANDT

Daniel Weyandt was born on Sept. 21, 1819 in One Leg Township,Tuscaraw as County, Ohio, in the log cabin his father built in 1818 asone of th e very early settlers. According to "Historical Collections," by C. A. H anna, an historical record of prominent people inHarrison County, Ohio , Daniel Weyandt was one of the county's oldestand best known citizens . He attended a primitive log school house,was a farmer, and practiced h is father's trade as a boot andshoemaker. His father John Weyandt's Wi ll listed Daniel'sinheritance: the north half of the west half of the N E Quarter ofSection 32, Township 13, Range 6, containing thirty-three a ndone-half acres, and another thirty acres of the south end of the farm.

During the Civil War, Daniel Weyandt enlisted on May 2, 1864 in the170 th Ohio National Guard Infantry, Company B, at Bellaire, BelmontCounty , which is adjacent to Harrison County. This regiment wascomposed of t he 74th Battalion of the Ohio National Guard fromBelmont County, and t he 78th Battalion of the Ohio National Guardfrom Harrison County. He w as forty-four years old when he wasmustered in on May 13, 1864. The re giment was organized as a OhioNational Guard Unit for one hundred days ' service under Colonel MilesJ. Saunders. Daniel served as a musician, p laying the fife with theRegimental Band. (NOTE: Daniel's daughter Cath erine Thompson wasquoted in the Coshocton, Ohio Tribune on Aug. 21, 19 55, stating thather father not only served as a regimental musician, h e was also anaccomplished flute and violin player.)

In June 1890, Daniel was included in the 1890 Census of the U. S.,Spec ial Schedule, Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Widows,etc: Da niel Weyandt, Musician, 170th O. N. G., Co. B, who served forfour mont hs from May 13, 1864 to Sept. 10, 1864. His disabilityincurred was 'Sw ollen Ankles.

Daniel was mustered out of the 170th Regiment at Camp Chase on Sept.10 , 1864, having served for four months. On May 11, 1889 he filed fora m ilitary pension, Application 702877, and received eight dollars amonth , Certificate 536232. His records describe him being five feeteleven i nches tall, with fair hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, and hisoccupatio n was shoemaker. These papers also describe a medicalproblem he develo ped in the service. His feet and legs became sobadly swollen that he c ould not walk without pain. This was serious,as the soldiers had to wa lk many miles wherever they went. InDaniel's pension application, Capt ain Sylvester S. Wallace signed anaffidavit declaring that he saw Dani el Weyandt suffering so badlywith swollen ankles that he could not wea r his boots. Captain Wallacetestified that he gave Daniel his own shoe s, and he wore Daniel'sboots. In 'Military Records of Individual Civil W ar Soldiers,' DanielWeyandt was recognized as having served With Disti nguished Service inthe Union Army during the Civil War.

Residences & events:

9/7/1850 Monroe Twp, Harrison Co, OH. Daniel and Catherine wereliste d in the census that year down the road from her brother Joseph.Their f amily included children: Mary, William and Adeline. Danielwas a shoe a nd bootmaker with property = $2000.
Daniel's will was dated 5/30/1901, probated 7/8/1901. It bequeathed:

To wife Catherine the farm and stock as long as she remained a widow.
To daughter Cassie Thompson, $200
The balance to daughters Mary M., Adaline, Charlotte, and son DanielD.
To grandchildren David Roy and Jennie Weyandt, a Lot in the Village ofH arrison County.
Son-in-law A. P. Thompson was not to be permitted to have anything tod o with the selling of his farm.
Son Daniel David was to be administrator.

Daniel was nearly eighty-two when he died on Sun. June 30, 1901 at9:00 A M in Bowerston, the last of John and Magdalena Weyandt'schildren. He w as reported to have had an abcess of the lungs, whichmay have led to h is death. His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. H.H. Davis at Tunnel H ill United Brethren Church. Daniel was a memberof the R. M. Lyon Post o f the Grand Army of the Republic, and wasburied in a military ceremony b y them in Tunnel Hill Cemetery,Section C, Row 1, Grave 7. A large grou p of relatives and friendsfollowed the casket to its resting place. Da niel's grave is markedwith the Grand Army of the Republic Service Meda llion, an honorreserved for Union Veterans of the Civil War.

After Daniel's death, John Cox rented the farm land, and the houseeven tually fell down.
