Notes for Ambrose ARTHUR

"This particular Ambrose ARTHURwas born in Knox Co., KY on January 25,1 824 to Joseph and Mary McFARLAND ARTHUR. His father was a nativeTenne ssean, born in 1801, and a farmer by occupation. Joseph wasmarried in 1 822 in Kentucky and in 1830, he came to Indiana. He diedin Greene Co., I N in 1860.

Ambrose's mother was born in KY in 1803 and died in 1863. In 1843,Amb rose ARTHUR married Mary WATKINS, dau. of Myer and Nancy WATKINS.Mary w as born in KY in 1823 and she died in 1852 leaving twochildren: Wesley A RTHUR and Nancy Ann ARTHUR. After his wife's death,Ambrose ARTHUR retu rned to his parents' home and lived there severalyears.

In 1861, Ambrose ARTHUR enlisted in Co. B, 33 Reg., Indiana Vol. INF,a nd participated in several battles. In 1864, he returned home onfurlou gh and while there, on April 4, married Maria JONES, dau. ofJoshua and E lizabeth JONES. Maria was born in 1838 in Monroe co., IN.Their childre n: Mary, Caturah, Lizzie, Burton, Theodore, Emma,Fletcher, and Lillie. "

From a message posted at Ancestry by Charles Delacroix:

"According to what I have, there were indeed "two Ambrose Arthurs" int he area in the period in question. One had as parents John Arthurand S usannah Bateman. The other Ambrose Arthur was son of JosephArthur and M ary "Polly" McFarland. This latter married twice. Hisfirst marriage wa s to Mary Watkins, having 2 children, one of whomwas William Wesley. M ary died young, about 1852; and Ambroseremarried. This is all per othe r folks who dug up the info & sharedwith me. I descend from this Ambro se Arthur's brother, Samuel Arthurof Greene County."

Residences & events:

1852 Following Mary's death, Ambrose and the two children moved backi n with his parents where he remained for several years.

1861 He enlisted in Co B, 33 Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry andw as in the battles of Stone River, Chickamauga, and others.

1865 He was discharged at Indianapolis.

Ambrose "owns 160 acres of land and is one who is respected andesteeme d by all classes. He belongs to the Republican party, andcast his fir st vote for J K Polk. He and wife are members of theMethodist Episcop al Church."
