Descendants say he served in the Rev War

10/1782 Orange Co, VA. At census time Francis Powell had a householdc onsisting of 8 whites and 4 blacks. In the same census were brotherBe njamin, widowed sister Elizabeth Shiflett, (Uncle) Thomas Powelland a M ary Powell.

Eugene Powell posted at Genealogy.com:

"1790, Listed in Orange Co., Census as H of HH, with 8 white souls.

2 Nov 1795, Francis Powell and Sally his wife to Michael Mawyers,Orang e County, Va. Deed Book, 1795-1800; p. 7-9, Margin note: Powell& Ux. t o Mawyers"

"When Francis moved to Elbert Co. Ga., he had many land deals, and hisc hildren witnessed many of the deals, along with a Lewis R. Powell orLe wis Riddle Powel. I have somewhat proof that he died 1830-1839, butnee d a Will to prove his children. This family has been proven a Thaplogr oup in the Y-DNA test for the Male Line of these Powells."

Descendant Denise Coleman wrote:

"I descend from him and have been trying to get all of the facts onhim f or quite some time. He served in Rev. War, filed for pension in1833. M oved to Elbert Co, GA in 1796 and was using Sr, as he had ason, Franci s Powell, Jr who married Nancy Dooly and moved toHabersham Co, GA and l ived until he died.

I did find where Francis was destitute prior to applying for hispensio n, or so it would seem because of Sheriff's sale documents Ifound.

Aug 28, 1807, 100 acres owned & occupied by Francis Powell taken, soldt o Thomas McCune.

Dec 2, 1814, 50 ac owned by Francis Powell Sr taken, sold to RalphBank s to satisfy 1813 tax of $0.60.

May 5, 1815, 40 ac owned by Honorias Powell, occupied by FrancisPowell S r, levied on to satisfy execution in favor of the Executorsof Middleto n Woods, dec'd."

"1812-1813, Elbert Co., Ga., Deed book O, page 202;
Francis Powel, Senr., to Benjamin Maddox, both of Elbert Co., for$300, o n a branch of Ceder Creek in sd. co., supposed to contain 100acres adj . near Donald Ross's fence on bank of branch, Honor Powel,on back line o f old survey, Frances Powell, Senr. & Frances Powel,Junior, where cros s fence stands between Powel, Sr. & Jr. strikesbranch that goes throug h plantation, to bank of branch near wherecross fence strikes branch, u p branch, including the plantation &premises where sd Frances Powel, S enr. now lives, which is all landin old survey W. of branch below line m ade between Honor Powel &Frances Powel, Senr. & above line made betwee n Frances Powell, Jr. &Frances Powel, Senr., in fee simple. He was 83 in 1835, per pension records.

From M. W. Hiden (Mrs. Philip W.), "The Antecedents of Richard Powello f Amherst County, Virginia", Tyler's Quarterly, Vol. 30, Number 1(July 1 948), p. 49.

"Francis Powell is said to have been born on February 21, 1756."
He was listed in GA pension rolls that year.
