Notes for Michael WISSLER

Michael lived several places but finally settled near his son Amos.Sup posedly he and Rebecca had 9 other children besides those listed, their n ames are unknown.

Residences:

1820 Salt Creek Twp, Hocking Co, OH. At the time of the census thaty ear he was 26-45 years old and the only male in the house. Therewere a lso 1 female under 10 and 1 aged 16-26.

1830 Salt Creek Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, was where he was listed in then ext census. It is unknown if he actually changed counties orperhaps c ounty lines shifted since the township is the same. Hishousehold incl uded 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-14,himself at 30-40, 1 fe male under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1female 20-30, and Rebec ca at 30-40. Nearby was Hannah Van Gundy. Heowned 1100 acres in the S W part of the Twp.

1840 Same address as before, there were living at his house 1 male5-1 0, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 20-30.

From Jeannie Smith in the Long and Buddenhagen Families of Neosha Co,K S:

Hearler (1996): "On September 2, 1848, Michael Whisler filed apetition s tating that he was entitled to five of seven undividedparts of 88 acre s of land in Salt Creek Township. This land belongedto Michael Weaver d ec'd. and left to his fourteen heirs: Margaretmarried to David Cryder o f Hocking Co., Isaac Weaver of Pickaway Co.,John Weaver of Pickaway Co ., Lavina wife of John Martin who has sincedied leaving two infant chi ldren, William A. Martin and George W.Martin of Hocking Co., the said h eirs now living being coparceners[persons sharing jointly with others i n inheritance] in the tract ofland with Catharine Weaver.

The following ten heirs of Michael Weaver have conveyed theirinterests : Catharine Bausher wife of Daniel Bausher, ElisabethDefenbaugh wife o f Samuel Defenbaugh, Henry Weaver, David Weaver,Samuel Weaver, Mary Ho over wife of Valentine Hoover, KeziahDefenbaugh wife of Abram Defenbau gh, Sarah Goodman wife of JohnGoodman, Phebe Heilburn wife of John Hei lburn, and Michael Weaver.

Catharine Weaver widow of Michael Weaver dec'd is entitled to dower of3 2 3/4 acres. The assessed value of the 88 acres was $ 1,150 whichMicha el Whisler agreed to pay. The land could not be partitioned." Itis not s tated in this extract why the land could not be partitioned-- possibly i t was because, as Hearler writes in the introduction,"if the widow was t o receive her dower or dowry rights in a one thirdportion of the land, i t had to be inspected and divided so she wouldhave access to roads, wa ter courses, a percentage of woods and otherthings necessary to making a l iving and surviving on a farm. If thiscould not be done the entire amo unt of land had to be sold." It isalso not stated in the extract why M ichael Whisler had a claim on theland, and on only "five of seven undi vided parts" and not the whole88 acres (as would be the case if it had b een sold or had Michaelheld a mortgage)."

8/29/1850 Still there. The census recorded a full house that year.Mi chael was 62 and retired. His real estate was valued at (lookslike) $6 463. Rebecca was 52 and living with them were sons Amos, 20,and Samu el along with Samuel's young family and two others, a 12 yearold Marga ret (? unreadable) and 15 year old Ephraim Worline, laborer.Apparently S amuel had taken over the farm as he was the only onelisted as a farmer b ut he had no real estate. In the same townshipwere brothers Henry, Ja cob, George and Samuel and sister Ann VanGundy.

6/27/1860 Same place. The census taker found Michael, 70, a widowerw ith a family consisting of daughter Rachel, 32, the family of sonAmos, 3 0, farmer, Sarah, 20, Ellen M, 4, and Henry Wolf, 18, farmlaborer. Mi chael was still farming as well.
LDS records have 8/21/1864 as his death date.
