"During this war with the French and Indians the legislature ofVirgini a passed numerous Acts for the defence [sic] of the frontiers,for payi ng the troops called into service, and for supplying the armywith prov isions. The frontier counties naturally furnished thelargest numbers o f men for this war. In the seventh volume ofHenings’ Statutes is foun d a schedule, appended to an Act passed inSeptember, 1758, giving the n ames of soldiers to whom pay was due,together with the names of other p ersons who held accounts againstthe Colony for work done for the army, f or provisions furnished, forhorses sold or hired, etc. In this schedu le lists are given from 39counties. Some of these lists are very shor t, a few are very long.The longest four, named in order of length, are t hose of Augusta,Bedford, Lunenberg, and Frederick. Inasmuch as what i s nowRockingham was then a part of Augusta, it is possible to find in t heAugusta list a number of Rockingham names. The following, copied from the list of Augusta soldiers, are almost certainly names ofRockingh am men:
