Dear Sir
Old Mr. William Bond last evening came on foot to my house through them ud from near Lawrenceburg with the enclosed letter of Mr. F. L.Edwards . I was somewhat surprised at the objections made by him toMrs. Neaves a ffidavit and at the objection ascribed by him and Iagain return Mr. Bo nd's papers with this information - you may informMr. Edwards that the re are hundreds old women in Kentucky who whenyoung could read and wri te well and or who from being disused cannotnow write or rather than n ot write a good hand will make their mark -and you know yourself hence t his ought not to be an objection, As Mr.Edwards will recollect that th e ____ Continental ____ ____ are from600 to 1,000 ____ ____ for like s ervices ___ revolutionary servicesand that it is very difficult to get T estimony especially to a mannow upwards of eighty years old by the tim e he travels or gets me orhis sons at this busy time of year to go int o the hills of HarrisonCounty 20 miles beyond Cynthiana and bring two o ld people to court itwould be like the Indian Gum - You may inform Mr. E dwards that I amwell acquainted with old Mr. Neaves and his wife. Abou t 20 years agothey lived in Mercer County for several years not more t han 3 1/2miles from me (When Peter Nan and ole ____ living below Provi dence),they then moved to where James Cardwell was living on Hickory N utCreek which place he sold to old Mr. Cardwell and I will pledge him my honor that they were respectable, honest, industrious people.Particu larly the old lady who was remarkably intelligent much more sothan the o ld man and I have no doubt that she could read and writeboth when she w as young and as to integrity and honesty of characterthey were not inf erior to any of their neighbors at the very ____Ihave not seen the old m an but once since he removed to HarrisonCounty which was a few years s ince when he came to Harrisonburg tomake old Mr. John W Cardwell a dee d. I would believe the old lady assoon as any person and his affidavit a re remarkable for its plainnessand I hope with this explanation that M r. Edwards will not reject herevidence. As to another objection why Mr . Bond did not apply soonerfor his pension or account for the property t hat he has disposed of ?the objection cold have been answered and or e xplained by Mr. Jos.White the delegate from Florida If you had called o n him not longafter the act of 1818 passed he employed Mr. White then o f FranklinCounty (KY) to obtain his pension Mr. White made sundry effo rts toobtain testimony and failed ? and he can inform this secretary o f Warthat he has Known Mr. Bond almost ever since he was born and that h ehas always been remarkably poor ? Mr. White can give a full explanation as to the character former applications and property of Mr. Bondand I h ope you will call on him and lay this letter before thehonorable secre tary of war. But if all this will not do, I willprocess the necessary a ffidavit?s to proof the facts I have stated, but it will be a great tas k for this old man now tottering on thebrink of the grave - - write me a s soon as you receive this and giveme the result-
Your friend
Robert B (Unintelligible)

PS; Old Mr. Bond tells me that the reason Mrs. Neaves made her marktha t she had no spectacles with her, and made her mark as you nowmany wom en do who can write, get Mr. Jos. White to go with you andmake a perso nal application and if you get his certificate transmitto me on sight a s the old man will again call. If the papers will notdo get them back a nd keep them until you hear from me again afterwriting,
