Notes for Ulrich\Woollery Jr COONROD


The name he carried into the new country was Ulrich Kuhnrad but itevol ved into the Woolery Coonrod of his descendants. He was a Jr butfollo wing the death of his father, he assumed the Sr position.

From the History of Pendleton Co, WV:

The names Conrad and Ruddle are often pronounced among our peopleCoonr od and Riddle. This is because these pronunciations moreclosely appro ximate the German forms Kuhnradt and Rueddel.

He was a farmer and miller.

Residences & events in his life:

An excerpt from the written speech of great grandson Woolery says:

"My grandfather, anotehr Woolery, he come over from the Rotterdam onth e ship Isaac, in 1749, him and his brother John. Brother Jacob hecome t he next year on the ship Patience. John was later killed byInjins on t he south branch of the P'tomac Valley in Augusta County,Veginya. That' d be March nineteen, eight years later. Back in 1758.Jacob's family se ttled in Veginya. All his family called themselvesConrads. Well they'r e still there, in and around Ft Sivert, Veginya."

1758 Fort Seybert, Pendleton Co, WV

Moorefield, Hardy Co, WV

1766 Thorn River, Augusta Co, VA. He patented 6 acres at the mouthof t he river.

According to descendants he fought in the French and Indian War aswell a s the Revolutionary War. Although records of verification havenot bee n found, that doesn't mean he didn't serve. The Library ofVirginia re search notes of Virginia Revolutionary War Records say:

"Virginia also organized county militia companies. All free whitemale s aged 16-50 were required to serve in a militia company unlessexempte d. Unforthunately few records of such service exist.Scattered pay rec ords, recommendations and appointments of officesand some militia fine s have survived."

Other sources say Virginia's Colonial Militia served 1761-1776 whichco vered both wars.

From Augusta Co, VA Court records:

3/21/1772 "Ulrunk Conrat" and Jacob Freind appraised the estate ofGeo rge Dice.

8/2/1773 Jacob Conrad, Wolrie Conrad, and Jacob Friend appraised thee state of Jacob Caplenger of South Branch.

His father transferred land to him:

Page 462.--18th March, 1777. Ulrick Conrad, Sr., to Ulrick Conrad,Jr., h is son, at mouth of Black Thorn on South Branch of Potowmack, 6acres w ith mill seat thereon erected, patented to Ulrick (Sr) 12thMay, 1770. ( The mill property was later acquired by a GeneralWilliam McCoy, mercha nt of Franklin, who also purchased the Peningerand Conrad estates whic h extended from Franklin to the mouth of theThorn.)

5/18/1778 "James Trimble's executors (John, Isaac and James Trimble),o f Rockbridge County, to Woolderick Conrod, Jr. Delivered: JacobConrod, s on of Wooldruck Conrod, 23d May, ____, on South Branch ofPotomac."

3/22/1780 "Commissioners reported following persons as refusing toswe ar to their taxable property: George Nicholas, John Flesher,Wolrick Co nrad, Jr., John Snider, Nicholas Simmon, Peter Smith,Barten Smith, Jon athan Buffington, Benj. Abett, Charles Fomelson, Wm.Hamilton, James La ckey, Joseph Fonelson and John Lacky--all to beprosecuted."

11/1780 "Commonwealth vs Woobeck Conrad, Jr - 19th April, 1780. Note xecuted for fear of the Tories."

1790 Augusta Co, VA. He and sons, Jacob, Adam and George were listedi n the Tithables list of all males over age 16 along with his father.Ja cob was living at home.

7/1792 He bought 180 acres from Hugh and Esther Botkins for 165pounds .

1793 Ulrick and Elizabeth and Adam and Abigail sold land to JohnFishe r for $100. The land was described as 150 acres adjoiningCoonrod's ot her land, patented 3/25/1789 to Ulrich, who conveyed halfthe land to A dam.

Following the death of his father, Ulrich continued to live on thefami ly farm.

9/1806 He and Elizabeth sold the homestead for L1,200, in preparationf or joining son, George, in Ohio.

7/16/1807 Walnut Creek Twp, Pickaway Co, OH.

1810 Pickaway Co, OH. Wollery & son, Adam, were the only Coonrodswho o wned property in that county. Woolery owned 500 acres,originally ente red as Dry Run, with a tax of $5.00 and another 390acres on the Scioto R iver with $4.87.5 tax due.

A message from Rufus Cox at Rootsweb.com says: "I have found part ofa d ocument dated June 1812 and it is from Pickaway Co. OH. Thisdocument m entions a lawsuit filed by John S Wills against UlrickCoonrod for the u se of a John Carlisle. The Pickaway County Sheriffis ordered to take U lrick Coonrod into custody. I have heard that alarge portion of this U lrick Coonrod's estate was lost in thislawsuit; can anyone help me out w ith any other section from thisdocument ?"

Woolery's will, dated 2/15/1814, (broken into paragraphs) stated:

"In the name of God, Amen, I Woollery Coonrad, Senior of PickawayCount y, Ohio, being weak of body, but of sound mind and memory,thanks be to G od, therefor, but all knowing that is appointed for allmen once to die , do make this as I for my last will and testament,revoking all and ev ery other will and testament by me made asintended to be made in any m anner whatsoever,

first I will all my estate, real and personal with all and every ofthe a ppointments thereon belonging that I may die seized of, to myson Henry C oonrod, subject to the following bequeaths, that is to say

I will and bequeath unto my grand daughter, Babary Coonrod, daughterof m y son Peter Coonrad, deceased, the sum of one thousand dollars tobe pa id to her at the age of eighteen years old, to be paid to her inland a t such place as my son Henry Coonrod kin buy for her at itsreal value, b ut if my grand daughter Barbary should die without alawful issue then i n that case the thousand dollars to her willedshall be divided among m y sons John Coonrod, Jacob Coonrod, AdamCoonrod, George Coonrod, Wooll ery Coonrod and Henry Coonrod and amongmy daughters Barbara Harpool, E lizabeth Morrel and Catherine Lawther,to be paid to them by my son Hen ry Coonrod in the year of our Lordone thousand eight hundred and twent y eight, to be paid to them ortheir heirs in property at the ( page to rn)....grand daughter doesnot marry, or has not a lawful spouse till h er death

therdly I will my daughter in law Elizabeth Coonrod wife of my sonPete r Coonrod the sum of two hundred dollars to be paid to her in thefollo wing form one hundred dollars to be paid to her in propertywithin four y ears after my decease and one hundred dollars withinfive years after m y decease,

lastly I nominate construct, and appoint Henry Coonrod my son the solee xecutor of this my last will and testament hereby, disallowing anddisc laiming all or any former wills testaments or bequests, of anykind, by m e heretofore in any wise made or intended to be, therebyratifying and c onfirming this and no there, as and for my last willand Testament."

He signed by "X", witnesses were James Casler and John Ruck.

1817 Final settlement of his estate was not made until that year.
