Notes for John POWELL


From Virginia Soldier of 1776:

Note, from Critic, May 12, 1889. John Powell of Newport News, yeomana nd ancient planter, pattented 150 acres of land in Elizabeth CityCo. 1 624. John Powell was born 1595, came to America and to VA. in1609. He w as a 'Captain'. His wife Katherne, born 1602, came toVirginia, 1622. T heir son John, b. 1624, was probably the CaptainJohn Powell who was a B urgess for Elizabeth City, 1657, 1659 and 1660and 1676. It is thought t hat their descendants resided in Yorkcounty."

Residences and events:

From records of the Virginia Company of London, Court records of4/18/1 619-5/8/1622:

"As allso that the saide Stephen Sparrow att his owne chargetransporte d three men to Virginia for whom Wm Webb received the monnyas hee witn esseth vizd: John Slater, and John Powell in the Georgein October 161 7 & Wm Thisselton in the Wm; and Thomas in August 1618,whervppon itt w as agreed accordinge to his desire that for the said 3men hee should h ave 150 Acres of Land."

6/19/1622 A William Kemp presented grievances to the court on behalfo f several "Inhabitants of Kikatan in Virginia now called ElizabethCitt y" who had been mistreated by then Treasurer of Virginia GeorgeYeardle y by confiscating their property and giving possession toothers :

"John Powell was in like manner turned out of Doores and forced tofors ake his howse wch he had built at great charges and had clearedmuch gr ound wth was verie chargeable to him also."

2/16/1623 His name as well as a Cathren Powell were among those"Livin g in VA" at "Bass's Choise"

2/7/1624 VA John arrived aboard the Swallow from London at age 29.

"Elzabeth Cittie beyond Hampton River in VA" where John was anoriginal s ettler.

5/1625 His name appeared on a list of patents in the incorporation ofE lizabeth City with 150 planted acres.

5/1712 Essex Co, Va, St Mary's Parish. John and brother, Thomas,boug ht 316 acres from Richard Long.

11/1713 He sold his portion of the previous land purchase to MichaelL awless, his wife, Jane, relinquishing her dower rights.

10/1716 Essex Co, VA. He was a witness to land sold by SamuelProsser .
