Joseph was a brother of Thena, who married Martha's brother, SolomonCo llins.

Residences & events:

1850 Greesy Creek Pct, Coles Co, IL. At census time Joseph was 25with p roperty = $350. Martha was 21 and they had 1 year old son,William. N ext door was Martha's sister, Fanny McAllister.

7/5/1860 PO Charleston, Morgan Twp, Coles Co, IL. Listed that yearin t he census as Jos Carter, 33, farmer, he had property worth$4000/175. M artha was 26 and they had 2 children, Thos, 8, and Mary,3. Martha's s ister, Fanny, and David McAlister were just down theroad.

1862 Joe and Martha took Solomon's son, John, at age 12 to raise.

1870 Curtisville, Morgan Twp, Coles Co, IL. Joseph was a successfulf armer with property = $5500/1200. The family consisted of himselftat a ge 42, Martha, 39, William, 20, Thomas, 18, Mary, 12, Missouri,10, and E llen, 1 mo. John Collins, 20, was still there as well.

1880 Still there. The census said he was a 52 year old farmer,Martha w as 49. Children still at home were Mary J, 22, Allis M, 18,Maggie, 10 , and John Collins, adopted nephew, 30. Hired hands livingwith them w ere Harvey/Harry Collins, 22, and Ed Mason (?) 24. Nextdoor was son T homas and family.

About the oldest settler of Morgan Township died this week almost fours core years.
JOSEPH CARTER
Living near Rardin in Morgan Township answered the last bugle call ofh is Maker at 4:45 A.M. Tuesday. Mr. Carter had been troubled withBright 's Disease for the past three years and not long ago was takenwith acu te Pneumonia and heart trouble which on Tuesday last,terminated fatall y.
He moved to this county from the Carolinas (This is an error. He wasbo rn in Tennessee.jrw) when but of two years of age and in which hehas r esided ever since. He was at the time of his death 79 years oldthus be ing a resident of Coles County 77 years. He married one of theCollins g irls and from this marriage his brother in laws and sisterin laws comp rise the Collins and McAlister's. The second generationof McGahey, Hou sels, Williams, Reynolds Waltons, Colverts, Nesbitsand many others.
Joseph Carter was one of the few remaining Mexican War Veterans ofwhic h there are but a few in the county. Major McConkey of this city,L. D. L ayor, Charleston and Mr. Good of the southwest section of thecounty.
He leaves behind him two sons, William Carter a former resident ofOakl and but now of New Mexico and Thomas Carter of Neoga besidesthese thei r are three daughters: Mrs. J. K. Brown of Morgan Township,Mrs. Will F oley of Rardin, and Mrs. David Carnahan of MorganTownship.
The funeral was held from the Greasy Point Church, at two O'clockWedne sday afternoon. Rev. W. P. Reeds of this city officiating.Internment i n Union Cemetery.
