Living with him were wifeMary, 28, N apoleon S, 2, and Wm H, 2 months, three farm hands:Jefferson Carr, 20, G eo Dillsaver, 23, and Spicer Cushman, 18. Theyalso had a servant, Ama nda Groves, 24. Cushman's relatives livednext door.
6/20/1870 Holland Twp near Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IL. The censusrec orded his name as John Hoglan, age 38, a farmer and his estate hadgrow n to $9000/4000. His wife, only listed as Mrs, was 28 so wassecond wi fe Carrie. The children were: Nap S, 12; W H, 10; Spray(sp ?) Jane, 8 ; and Clara, 6. Living with them were a John McCowan,27, Alfred Wabil e, 20, Lavina Beam, 18, and Edward Beam, 7 mo. Noneof them had occupa tions or relationships listed. Next door was theJacob Elliott family w ith William Elliott next to him and down theroad in the other directio n was another Elliott with first name thatlooks like Tharlies (?). A ll probably Mary's relatives through hermother.
6/15/1880 Same place. The census that year found him with wife,Carri e, 44, and children Napoleon S, 22; William H, 20; Clara, 17;Lizzie, 8 ; John R, 6 and farm laborer, Levi Wheat. John was stillfarming. Nex t door lived the family of William Elliott, a few doorsdown was Jacob E lliott, and even farther was John Elliott.
