Notes for George Jefferson COLLINS


George was a farmer.

He served as adminstrator of his father's estate.

7/4/1860 PO Charleston, Morgan Twp, Coles Co, IL. In that censusGeor ge was a 31 year old farmer without property. Living with himwere wif e Mary, 23, and sons Richard L, 4, and Joseph F, 1. Nextdoor was wido wed sister Elizabeth Campbell.

"Took part in the Charleston Riot, 28 March 1864, Charleston, ColesCou nty, Illinois. George was a "Copperhead." He was wounded duringthe Rio t, captured and taken to Springfield, Illinois along withothers. Then s ent to Ft. Delaware a U. S. prison on an Island in theDelaware River. H e was later set free by President Abraham Lincoln."

1870 Curtisville, Morgan Twp, Coles Co, IL. The census takerrecorded a l arge group living in his house. He was 41 year oldfarmer with $600 in p ersonal property only, no real estate. WifeMary was 33 and the childr en were: Richard, 14; John 8; Jacob, 3 andJane, 1. Also living there w ere 2 hired hands, Alec Harp, 22 (whowould marry George's niece, Luci nda Collins), & Joseph Nesbit, 35(who had married George's niece, Sara h McAllister).

1880 Seven Hickory Twp, Coles Co, IL. In that census he was listed asa f armer, age 51. Mary was 42 and they had a large family: John Roy,18; J acob B, 12; dau, M J, 11; Effie D, 7; son W O, 4; and dau M M,1. He to ld the census taker both parents were born in E VA.
His grave is unmarked.
