1826 Fayette Co, IL. He arrived with the rest of the family.
1/23/1827 Shelby Co, IL. The family never actually moved, rather ane w county was formed and the lines shifted.
1830 Prect 4, Shelby Co, IL. At census time John was living nextdoor t o his parents with several brothers just down the road. John,at age 2 0-30, had in his household 2 females under 5, 2 females10-15, and his w ife, in the same age range as himself.
Coles Co,IL. He had 2 or 3 minor children when they moved there.
7/21/1836 He bought a 40 acre plot located at S28 T13N R07E at aFeder al sale for $1.25/acre.
11/16/1836 Adding to his estate, he purchased another 80 acres at S21T 13 R07E, again at Federal sale for $1.25/acre.
2/22/1837 Another 40 acres was received from a Federal sale for thesa me price as before. This property was located at S21 T13N R07E.
2/16/1839 He, as co-borrower along with John G Purvis, owed hisfather 's estate a note of $125.75. Suit was brought by brother,Elisha, as a dministrator of the estate, but he "was not found,"apparently having a lready moved west, leaving John Purvis holding thebag to satisfy the j udgment. Purvis paid his half and the rest wasdropped.
1840 Big Creek, Rives Co, MO. was where the next census taker foundhi m. His family included 2 males under age 5, he was 40-50, 2females ag ed 5-10, 1 at 10-15, 1 was 20-30, and 1 at 40-50. Threedoors down was b rother Randolph.
10/16/1850 Dist 79, St Clair Co, MO. That year John, 54, a farmerwi th real estate worth $500, had living with him: new wife Lucinda,34, E lizabeth, 16, Juliet, 14, Coleman, 12, William, 10, Mary E Smarr(Smart ), 9, Lucinda's daughter, and John S Whitley, 3.
8/19/1860 Speedwell Twp, St Clair Co, MO. The census takerapparently d idn't listen well, listing John at nearly the same age asthe previous c ensus, at 55. He was still farming and his propertywas valued at $200 0/1000. Lucinda was 44 and living with them wereWilliam, 20, Mary E, 1 8, John, 13, and Margaret, 9.
The 1860 census says John was born in TN.
