10/21/1850 Dist 6, Jackson Co, TN. Samuel, 42, born in VA, had noocc upation or property at census time. Mary was recorded as Malinda,30, w ith children James, 6, Margaret, 4, and John, 6 months. Alsocounted t here was 13 year old Mariann Whitehead. Malinda and allchildren were b orn in TN. Next door was Samuel's mother, DoshaMartin, 65. On the ne xt page was the family of William and MargaretWhitehead, ages 66 & 68 r espectively, probably Melinda's parents..

That year at census time, Saml was52 , a fairly wealthy farmer with $7500/500 worth of property.Malinda wa s 40 and children in the household at the time were James,17, Peggy, 1 4, John, 9, and "Olonzo", 3. Next door was brotherWillet, probably li ving in the old homestead left by their mother.
Was this our Samuel Martin mentioned in Jackson Co, TN Chancery Court1 870:
"One hundred thirty acres [Survey map filmed], sold to Wade H. Wilmoreb y Samuel Martin, being same land deeded to Samuel G. Martin by RuthMar tin. Survey at request of Wade Wilmore & Rufus Martin."
Descendant Richard Martin says the family was displaced by the CivilWa r to IL but Malinda and the children were in MO by 1861 whendaughter P eggy married there.
