Fred liked the "hard sauce". He once disappeared for several days,the n fabricated a story that he had been kidnapped and robbed of a$400 ch eck in his possession but had managed to escape. The story ofthe alle dged kidnapping even appeared in the newspaper. Family saidhe had jus t been drunk and wanted to account for the $400 he hadspent on alcohol .

MATTOON - Fred J. Arthur, 76, of rural Mattoon, died at 8:40 a.m.Wedne sday at Mattoon Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 20, 1898 in Humboldt Township, the son of Aarona nd Cora Davis Arthur. He married Pansy Evans on Feb. 15, 1919. Shedi ed in 1965.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Eloise) Ashwortho f rural Mattoon; Mrs. Anna Mae Fifer and Mrs. Myrna Kearney, both ofCh icago; and Joy Arthur, address unknown; one son, Donald Arthur ofLinde nhurst, Ill; one sister, Mrs. Helen Wilson of Charleston; 16grandchild ren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three daughters.
Mr. Arthur was a member of the Mattoon Moose Lodge.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday atSchilling' s Funeral Home in Matton with Rev William Stark and Rev.Henry Jackson o fficiating. Burial will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery.Friends may call f rom 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
