Purvis, William, 1 CL
8/4/1776 Culpeper Co, VA. He was enlisted by brother, Sgt JamesPurvis, in the 1st VA Regt of the Continental Line, the same unit asbrother, John. He participated in the battles against the British inthe middle states, being in the battles of Brandywine Creek, PA;Monmouth Courthouse, NJ; the storming of Stony Point, NY; as well asseveral minor skirmishes.
1777-8 Valley Forge, PA. He was there during the famed winterencampment.
9/1777 The muster roll and pay list of Capt Rich'd Taylor 1st Regt:
James Purvis Ensign on command $20 oncommand
William Purvis Pvt sick at Bethleham $6 2/3 sick atBehleham
8/1/1779 Smith's Clove, NY, was where he was discharged. He laterreceived $96 per year pension.
Culpeper Co, VA. Returning home he married for the first time andreturned to farming.
1782-1787 Culpeper Co, VA. William and his father were the only"Purvesses" listed in county taxpayers records.
Fall, 1795 In preparation for moving west, he sold his land. A partywas formed of the Burk family, his second wife's kin, and nephew, JohnPurvis. They journeyed through the mountains of MD and PA, then byflat boat down the Ohio River to KY.
Maysville, KY. Disembarking, they continued overland to Flemingsburg,K Y.
Fleming Co, KY. William eventually bought a 197 acre farm along theLicking River and began farming again.
1810 Fleming Co, KY. At census time, William and John "Purviss,"were the only ones by the name in the entire state, both residing inthis county as neighbors.
1818 William applied and received a pension based on his war service.

He received from 1818-1832, then 1833-1835.
1820 Still Fleming Co. That year the census found Wm and John Pervisliving next door to each other. In William's household were 3 malesunder the age of 10, 2 at 10-16, 1 at 16-25, William was over 45, 2females age 16 -26 and 1 at 45+.
Mid 1820s Gettin on in years, he remained behind while some of therelatives moved on. Several of the Burk in-laws apparently traveledwith the group, being listed in Sangamon Co, IL, in the 1830 census.
