Notes for Christopher Cornelius NEWKIRK


Residences and events:

1795 Harrison Co, KY, other Newkirks lived in Jefferson andMontgomery C o. Elizabeth's family lived in Clark Co.

Clark Co, KY where he and Elizabeth married and chidlren were born.

1810 Estill Co, KY. At census time his family consisted of 4 malesun der 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45 (himself), 2females u nder 10, 3 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45 (Elizabeth).Two doors dow n lived brother-in-law Micajah Hall and 1 house fartherheld brother-in -law, Samuel Eaton. Elizabeth's brothers, Simon andAmbrose Powell als o lived in the same county

The Newkirks apparently left the state about the same time as thePowel ls (1814). They probably went through Jefferson Co, KY, whererelative s may have joined the journey as the same names are seen inIN as were i n KY.

1820 Crawford Co, IN. That year at census time Cornelius' familyinc luded: 3 males under 10, 3 at 10-16, 1 was 16-26, Cornelius wasover 4 5, 1 female under 10, 1 at 10-16, 1 was 16-26, and 1 was alsoover 45. T hey lived between two daughters, the James Brileys on oneside and the G arret Halls on the other.

From the Newkirk Family:

"Cornelius appears to have been a preacher in the Primitive BaptistChu rch. There is no record of his having been in military servicebut he d id serve in 1825 as a Judge; or perhaps Justice of the Peace;in Englis h, Crawford County, Indiana."

And from Primitive Abptist Family History:

"PROVIDENCE (1819)

Providence Church, about three miles east of Paoli, was organized onAu gust 7, 1819, at the home of Brother Robert Sands, in CrawfordCounty, w ith twenty-one charter members. They included Robert Sands,Zipporah Sa nds, Cornelius Newkirk and wife, (another listing includesSnowden, Ray a nd McDonald children), Samuel McMahan, Jennie McMahan,James McMahan, M ary McMahan, Rachel Pittman, and Mary Peters. Thepresbytery was compos ed of Elders Isom Gwin and Kinsey Veatch.

The church met for a few years in homes, mainly in Crawford County,but i n 1828 constructed a log meeting house in Orange County. In 1852a hewe d log structure replaced the first, and still later a framehouse repla ced the log one. The present frame meeting house waserected west of th e cemetery in 1880, at a cost of $700.

Providence Church became a member of the Blue River Association in1819 a nd remains part of that body.

Pastors have included Elders Isom Gwin, Kinsey Veach, Samuel McMahan,W illiam H. Gammon, William C. Hancock, Robert Sands, CorneliusNewkirk, J ames McMahan, Paul Chastain, Ray Jones, Raymond Adkins,Elmer Fleener, L loyd C. Chastain, Lawrence Motsinger, and MikeChastain."

"6 April 1820

The Church chose Brother Robert Sands as Deacon and Brother WalterAlex ander as their writing clerk. In August of the same year BrothersJohn D avis and Cornelius Newkirk were messengers to the Association."

1830 Crawford Co, IN. The census recorded his family of 5 wascompris ed of: 1 male aged 15-20, Cornelius was 60-70, 1 female at5-10, 1 at 1 5-20, and 1 was 50-60. Next door was the young family ofElias Newkirk . Who was he? The Snowden family was down the road.

By 1840 Elias was the only Newkirk in Crawford Co.
Cornelius was 60-70 years old in 1830.
His will was probated 5/11/1839 and mentioned all 11 children asposted .
