Notes for John Sr VAN GUNDY


Residences & events in his life:

1758 Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. On the Tax assessor's list were:
Freny Goondy, widow by deed, 200 acres
John Gundy, freeman with note (21 yrs, no land, living with parent orother tax payer)
As oldest child, he was probably living with his mother and takingcare of the family.

1760 Same place. Another tax list:
Widow Gundy
John Goondy, freeman
Peter Goondy, freeman

1763 Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. Upon the death of his mother, heand w ife Anna petitioned the court to sell her land and divide theproceeds. Petition was denied. See note under his father for furtherdetails.

1763 Where was John that year at tax time? Tax assessors listincludes::
o Widow
Peter Gander, inmate
Christ Gondy, inmate

1768 John's land was used as a marker, along with that of John Davisand Zaccheus Davis, to describe property involved in a land transfer.

1769 Taxes that year were assessed for:
Peter Gundy, inmate, cooper
Christian Gundye, 30 acres
John Gundey, 170 acres

1770 Again from the tax list:
Peter Gunty, inmate, 2 cows
Christian Gundy, 30 acres, 12 improved
John Gundy, 169 acres, 60 improved

1771 John Gundey and Christian Ganndey were the only ones on that taxl ist.

1772 That year John Gundee, tenant, had 1 horse, 2 cows and 3 sheepfor which he was taxed. On the list but no property recorded werePeter and Chrstn.

1773 John Gundy, tenant, no other property listed.

1775 The tax list said only John Gundey, no details, and the only oneb y the name on the list.

1777 First tax list:

James Condy, 30 acres
David Gundy, non-associator
John Gundy, non-associator
(A non-associator was a taxpayer who refused to take the oath ofallegiance to the new revolutionary government. In that part of thestate this usually meant they were Mennonites or other Anabaptist inreligious faith. )

1778 - 1780 Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. At tax time he was the only" Gundy" listed on the tax list. In 1779 he had 50 acres.

1790 Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. The census recorded John's familyas the only Gundys left in the county. In his household were 1 maleover 16 (John) and 3 females. Down the road was Christ* Ulrich andseveral Huber families. Brother Benjamin was in Berks Co whileChristian and Joseph were in Northumberland.

1800 Still there. The census that year recorded John Gundy, over 45,with a household of females: 1 under 10, 1 at 10-15, 1 was 16-25, 1at 26-44 and 1 over 45. From John's will, it seem daughter BarbaraWenger moved back in with her parents after her husband died in 1799.John and Widow Gund were the only ones by the name in the county. Andwho was the Widow Gund, over 45, living alone between Widow Sparar andJohn Fasnacht in that same township?

1810 Still there. If John died 1806, then who is this in the census?Listed were John Gundy, over 45, the family had decreased to only 1female age 16-25 and one also over 45. Next door was David Wenger, 2doors farther down was Samuel Martin who would serve as executor ofJohn's estate. John was the only Gundy/VanGundy in the county.
His will was dated 8/8/1806, same day he died according to abstract ofLancaster Co Wills. However, he was listed in the 1810 census. Hiswill was proved 7/24/1819. It said:

In the Name of God, Amen. I John Gundy of Earl township, LancasterCounty and State of Pennsylvania yeoman am weak in Body but of soundMind memory and understanding Do hereby make this my last Will andTestament in Manner and form following viz:

First I will and ordain that after my funeral Expenses are paid all myjust Debts shall be paid by my hereafter named Executors.

Further I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife her Bed and bedsteadtogether with the sum of Fifty Pounds Lawful Money of Pennsylvania andfurther give and bequeath unto her all the Profit and Income of myhouse and Plantation from and after my Death during her natural lifethat is to say she shall allow my Daughter Barbara to live in said mydwelling house during said Term, and shall mantain her if necessaryduring my Wifes natural life, the Remainder of my personal Estate Iorder to be sold by the public Sale, my Wife shall have a right totake as much of my household and Kitchen furniture so that it willammount to the said fifty Pounds according to the appraisement orshall be intitula to the fifty Pounds above mentioned which I allow tobe in full for her Widow Dower and shall have no further right to myEstate either Real or personal.

Further it is my Will and I ordain that if my personal Estate isinsufficiennt to discharge and to pay off my just Debts that then andin such Case my hereafter named Executors shall have a right to letsome part out in Rent of said my Plantation which may be spared bestfor to pay off said Debts further it is my Will and ordain that ifsaid my Debts are all paid and satisfied and if any sum of Money shallremain in the hand of my hereafter named Executors after theSettlement I allow the same to be paid unto my beloved Wife.

Further give and bequeath to my granddaughters Elizabeth Wenger andSusanna Wenger after the Death of my beloved Wife all my real Estateor Tract of Land situate in Earl Township aforesaid containing aboutone hundred acres be the same more less. To have and to hold the samefor them and each of their Heirs and assigns for ever as tenants incommon that is to say equally amongst them divided subjectnevertheless for their Mother Barbara late the Wife of John Wenger tohave full Right to live unmolested in my Dwelling house wherein I nowlive from and after the Death of my beloved Wife during the naturallife of the said Barbara, that is to say find her insufficientvictuals and clothing and other necessaries.

Further it is my Will that if one of my grand Daughters should diewithout lawful issue that then and in such case the surviving shall beIntituled to the said other share.

And Lastly I nominate and appoint Samuel Martin Junior to be Executorof this my last Will and Testamen In Witness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand and seal the Eight Day of August in the year of our LordOne Thousand Eight hundred and Six.

Signed, sealed, and acknowledged by by the said John Gundy as & forhis last Will and Testament in the presence of us who saw himsubscribe the same David Marty.

On the 24th Day of July, Anno Domini 1819,
Before me the Subscriber personally appeared Christian Meyer Esqr, oneof the subscribing Witnesses to the within Will, who being dulyaffirmed according to Law did declare and say that he was present andsaw and heard John Gundy the Testator sign, seal publish prounounceand declare the within Instrument in Writing as and for his last Willand Testament and that at doing thereof he was of sound and disposingMind Memory and understanding to the best of this Affirmantsknowledge, observation and belief. And that he did also see DavidMarty (who is now dead) subscribe his name as a Witness to theExecution of the said Will in the presence of and at the request ofthe Testator and in the presence of this Affirmant and further saithnot. Be it remembered that on the 24th Day of July A.D. 1819 the last Willand Testament of John Gundy deceased, was proved in due form of Lawand Letters testamentary thereon were granted to Samuel Martin theExecutor therein named he having first been duly qualified accordingto law, will and truly to administer the Estate of said deceased, andexpecially to eshibit a true perfect Inventory thereof unto theRegisters office at the City of Lancaster, within are month from thedate hereof and to render a just and true account of his Executorshipon said Estate in one year, or when there to lawfully required. Givenunder the seal of said office.
