Notes for Martha JESTER

Martha led a colorful life, known in the day as a "rounder" asevidence d by the Van Gundy divorce papers. It seems she liked oldermen and am ong her paramours was the next door neighbor from SciotoTwp, Joseph Ti pton, with whom she had an on-going relationship overthe years.

On 8/28/1850 at census time Marthey "Gundy," 39, and daughters,Eliza, 8 , and Emeley, 7, were living with Jonathan Maden, 65, inJackson Twp, P ickaway Co, OH. She had no occupation.

By 2/7/1855 when Peter filed for divorce, Martha was living withJoseph T ipton.

Before the next census on 7/19/1860, Martha had remarried as she wasli sted as Martha Nyhizer, 51. She still lived in Jackson Twp, POCirclev ille, Pickaway Co, OH. Her family was varied and included:Ann Brown, 2 6, John Gundy, 8, Emily Gundy, 17, and Rebecca Tipton, 2,all born in O H. Daughter Eliza Gundy, 19, was living with the PeterHeuber family i n Circleville as a domestic.

(Ann Brown was probably Joseph Tipton's daughter who married AmosBrown i n 1855. Most likely John's father was Jonathan Madden asdivorce paper s stated Martha committed adultery with Madden on3/10/1852, John was b orn the same year. Besides John, who were theother two children she s upposedly had between the separation anddivorce? Rebecca's father mus t have been Joseph Tipton but whywasn't her name Nihiser since Martha m arried Nihiser in 1857?)
In 1850 she was 39, making her birth year 1811, and in 1860 she was51, m aking the year 1809.
