1830 Vermilion Co, IL. The census that year said John was 30-40years o ld and had living with him 2 males under 5, 2 were 5-10, 1male at 20-3 0, 2 females 5-10, 4 were 10-15, and 1 at 20-30. Nextdoor neighbors w ere Hunters and Wards.
10/8/1831 Vermilion Co, IL. John bought 2 tracts of public land, oneo f 80 acres at a mineral sale, price unlisted, the other, also for 80ac res at a section sale, for $1.25/acre for a total of $100. Bothproper ties were located at S21, T19N, R13W, PM2. His place of
residence at the time was not recorded.

5/17/1836 Shelby Co, IL, was recorded as his place of residence whenh e purchased public land in Moultrie Co at a Federal sale for$1.25/acre , a total of $200. The land was in 2 plots of 80 acreseach, one situa ted S11, T13N, R05E, PM3, the other at S12, T13N,R05E, PM3.
7/26/1836 John bought more Moultrie Co land, 40 acres at S13, T13N,R0 5E, PM3 for $50.
8/2/1836 He paid $100 for another 80 acres at S13, T13N, R05E, PM3,ma king a total of 280 acres in Moultrie Co.

6/29/1838 Shelby Co, IL, near Sullivan on the Okaw River. He andson- in-law, Sanford Green, bought 3 1/2 acres from Joshua and GrissyAnn Pa tterson for $15. The land was described as the SE 1/4 of theNE 1/4, S 24, T13, R5 E of 3rd PM. They built a mill but John died afew months l ater. (The History of Shelby and Moultrie Counties,Illinois, states t hey built the mill in 1833.)

John's death was the first recorded in Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL.H e died as a result of a head wound after being kicked by a horse.
8/31/1839 Shelby Co, IL. Stating that John's personal estate wasinsu fficient to satisfy all claims against his estate, Rachel sold aplot o f land to Seth Montague as highest bidder for $350. Thedescription is t he same as the plot bought for the mill but there was
no mention of Sanford Green as co-owner.

John's gravestone says he died in 1836 but he had land dealings aslate a s 1838. Some family members think John was reinterred from thePatters on Cem and a new stone was erected after the old stonedeteriorated bey ond deciferability.
Also John's son, William, is buried on the same stone and was missedby t he readers of the cemetery when they listed each burial. Son,John, is b uried in the next plot with several of the Harbaugh familyburied furth er down the same row.
