1854 He quit the carpenter trade and moved to the portion of hisfathe r's farm which had been set aside for him and became a farmer.Today th at farm is nearly all located within the city limits of NewCastle.
Pyrrhus and Mary lived on the farm until the Civil War when heenlisted a s Capt of Co C 36th IN Inf. He was forced to resign due todisability f rom wounds he received at Chickamauga, GA. One historysays he "was a n atural born soldier, and came honestly by the warspirit which sent him i nto the Mexican War and later into the greatconflict. The martial ins tincts of the sire had descended to theson, and when the nation leaped t o arms, he was among the first toanswer the call for volunteers."
