Mrs. Purvis, who was the mother of the famous Purvis brothers,
Purdue athletes, died in St. Elizabeth's hospital, Lafayette, after a
serious illness of several weeks. An operation was performed April
14, and for a time it seemed that she would recover. On Thursday,
however, she suffered a relapse.
One of the sons, Duane, was in Des Moines, IA, Friday for the
Drake relays. he was expected to return to Lafayette after competing
in the javelin throw. he had decided to return to his mother's
bedside when informed of her illness Thursday afternoon.
Advised later by his mother's physician that he would not be able
to reach Lafayette before her death, he decided to remain in Des
Moines. Mrs. Purvis had been ill for some time. When Duane left for
Des Moines her condition was critical but it was believed she would
live until his return.
Before entering college the Purvis boys were students in Mattoon
high school where they distinguished themselves in athletics.
Beside Duane, the other two were James Carleton purvis, former
football star at Purdue, and Kenneth (Tom) Purvis, also a gridiron
luminary at James Millikin, Decatur. Duane was placed on the
Associated Press All-American football team last fall.
Mrs. Purvis was born near Arthur, and was about 45 years old.
With her family she resided for a while in Sullivan, and later moved
to Mattoon, where Mr. Purvis was employed by the Illinois Central
railraod. The family moved to Lafayette several years ago, where
Carleton Purvis, one of her sons, is employed as an assistant of Noble
Kizer, Purdue football coach. Mrs. Purvis leaves her husband, three
sons, Tom Purvis of Danville, Carleton and Duane of Lafayette, Ind., a
daughter, Marcelline Purvis of Lafayette, and her mother, Mrs. Ida
Cornwall."
