Notes for Francis Marion "Frank" POWELL


Residences & events in his life:

1875 Moultrie Co, IL. At age 21 he rented a farm which he worked int he summers for 3 years while teaching school.

1879 Moultrie Co, IL. He bought an 80 acre farm which he later solda nd bought a hardware store from H.O. Snyder & Co. He kept a stockof a bout $4,000 in the store and in connection with that, alsooperated a h arness business.

6/16/1880 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. At census time Frankwa s a 25 year old farmer. He and Leona, 23, had their first 2childrenIv y M, 3, and Sylva J, 1. Next door was sister Mary and JamesDrew, proba bly Leoma's brother as well.

7/5/1900 Bourbon Twp, Douglas Co, IL. Having moved before the nextce nsus, Frank M, 45, was a grain dealer. He and Leoma, 44 had beenmarri ed 24 years with 3 children, all living. Sons, Sylvan Z, 20,and Otis E , 15, were still in the house..

1907 Tuscola, Douglas Co, IL

1915 461 E Condit St, Decatur, Macon Co, IL, was their address whengr andson, Hugh, married. Frank was a grain dealer with offices inthe Gu shard and Wait buildings. On source said he carried onbusiness there f or 15 years, buying grain in Arthur, Fairbanks,Cadwell, and Tuscola.

Prior to moving to Hammond, they were given a surprise farewell partya t the home of son, Otis, by the Atwood Crochet Club of which Leonawas a m ember. "The evening was pleasantly spent in conversation andmusic. P umpkin pie, sandwiches and coffee were served. The othersurprise occu rred when their grandson, Lieutenant Hugh P Rigney, who
is home on a ten days' leave from Camp Hancock, appeared with abride."

1915 Hammond, Douglas Co, IL, where he was in charge of the grainelev ator.

1919 Bement, IL

12/23/1919 Frank served as toastmaster for the annual ladies' Atwood( IL) club. The newspaper said he "in his able manner, kept thespirit o f Christmas joy abounding until 8:30 when the children of theclub gave t heir program....Frances Powell then sang a Christmas carolprepatory to t he appearance of old Santa..."

1921 Decatur, Macon Co, IL was his address at the time of the annualP owell family reunion.

1923 Denver, CO

1925 California was their residence when they celebrated their 50thwe dding anniversary.

1926 & 1927 Decatur, Macon Co, IL, was his address when he signed theP owell family reunion rosters.

1928 Arthur, Douglas Co, IL, was their address when Leona was movedto t he IOOF Home in Mattoon.

1928 IOOF home, Mattoon, Coles Co, IL. It is uncertain if Frankmoved i nto the nursing home at the same time as Leona or a littlelater. At a ny rate, he too was a resident there.

1931 He attended the Powell reunion for the last time.
His death was noted in the Powell family reunion notes.
